Ah. Well, you connect, yes? And then Vista will prompt you to choose a location. Public is good. :D

Unless you want to access other peoples' computers for....some strange reason. Then you'll want to turn on Network Discovery, but I digress. ;)

Other than that, I recommend you have a good firewall, and be aware of the security of the network you're on.

Best setting for your wireless, you say? Other than what I've mentioned, you could also, I suppose, try manually assigning an IP address for higher priority in some cases? Really just throwing things out there. You could also use an alternative utility to connect. Also, as you may be aware, some wless cards have better range and tenacity than others.

Anyways, hope some of that helped. :)

    Cheers....

Well, I doubt the occasion will arise when this would really come in handy.

You can check this out, and try this:

Click on wless icon > Network and Sharing Center > View Status (next to the current network) > Properties (not wless properties) > IP4 or 6 > Properties > Use this address.

    Cheers....

Make sure you have a good firewall and there is an option to choose not to make other computer access yours.

Just make sure to select "public" environment as you get connected, this way your laptop won't trust others.
