    Hi all...

I've have an Asus WL-500W router which is connected to my ADSL Modem. I've disabled the DHCP server in the WL-500W because I only want it to work as an Access Point.

I've recently borrowed an Apple Time Capsule and both the Time Capsule and my computer are connected to the WL-500W with an Ethernet cable. When I'm doing it like that the Internet works and the Time Capsule turns up as a Network Drive.

    But here's my problem...

When I'm using my Wireless connection between my computer and WL-500W my Internet connection works fine, but I can't get access to my Time Capsule...

My computer has an IP which is 10.0.0.2 and my Time Capsule has an IP which is 10.0.0.7... I can ping the Time Capsule when using Ethernet but I can't when using Wireless...

I can setup the Time Capsule so it connects via Wireless to the WL-500W and then I can see the Time Capsule as a Network Drive, also when I'm using Wireless between my computer and WL-500W. But when doing that it will always use the Wireless connection even if I plug in the Ethernet cables. And I would like it to take advantage of the fastest connection available...

    Regards,
    Jakob

Just a few thoughts since no one has responded to your thread.

No software is required to run or setup routers. Some mfg provide one to help with the installation, but not required.

You disabled DHCP in the WL-500L router and only reported you have a modem. Is the modem a combo unit, modem/router ? If not you really need to have DHCP on. I would take a close look at your FW settings. If you only have a single IP address it may be blocking the Time Capsule. I normally add a rule to allow the complete subnet. But if you use multiple networks and all running on def subnets you will have a lot of duplication, which makes it a higher security risk. Change the def subnet to something unique. Then add a rule to allowing the complete subnet xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx/255.255.255.0. If you on Vista try turning off IPv6. Check your wireless services,, normally there is a lot of unnecessary garbage that is loaded.

The ADSL modem is a combined modem/router from my ISP... I've disabled my Firewall on my computer (Comodo Firewall and also that Windows Security thingy...) and nothing has helped...

On the WL-500L have you assigned a static IP to it, normally outside the DHCP range? And did you connect the router via lan to lan. This is needed to turn it into a switch, with the main router controlling all of the DHCP functions.

I've assigned a static IP of 10.0.0.200 to my WL-500W. Also I've connected my ADSL modem to the LAN port on the WL-500W.

Hi, let me see if I understand your issue.

    1. The TC and the laptop wired: The TC sees the laptop and it performs the backup properly.

    2. The TC and laptop wireless: The TC sees the laptop and it performs the backup properly.

    3. The TC wired and the laptop wireless: TC and laptop don't see each other.

    Hi Wirelessman,

Yes, that is correct... But I kinda gave up and returned the TC to my company. Now I've borrowed a HP MediaVault Pro MV5020 instead. This one performs perfect whether I'm using a wired or wireless connection...

But thanks for the help everyone :)

    Regards,
    Jakob

Ok, sorry if we were not quick enough to help you, but sometimes that's the best, just change the product and get one it works.

That strategy doesn't work very well for the members of this forum, here we like to break our heads to see what we have inside :D

Hehe... It's not that you guys weren't quick enough. Normally I wouldn't have anything against waiting some days but I just needed this to work rather fast.

I fully understand you, I'm like that too, sometimes I may do many runs in the same day to compusa or bestbuy to get the right product, other times I just like to know what is going on, but time rules.

On some routers there is a security feature (privacy) that prevent the wireless and wired from seeing each other.
