Usually my ping for CS 1.6 is 70-150

I have Yahoo DSL though, so I'd expect better. The connection says the signal is excellent with 54.0 mb. I'm using my wireless PC card.

When I'm at my friend's house, who has the same service, he gets around 30. The same goes for my other friend.

It might be important to know that I get the same ping as them when I bring this laptop over to their house, so I doubt it's the computer.

    Here are my specs anyways:

    1.3 Celeron M
    256MB RAM
    64MB Shared GMA 900

Then a few days ago, my pings were 20 - 50! Why did this happen, and how can I make it so my pings are like that all the time?

I've tried tweaking a bunch with the in game console, but no results.

    Thanks for any help.

Yeah, I'm getting a new laptop soon.

The thing is, I got that low ping with the 256. Anyone know why?

Start with updating the firmware by going to your routers website, and the intel site to update the drivers. Try by passing the router if possible to see if you get the same speeds. As in instead of the ethernet cable going to the router, plug it into the back of your laptop and then enable local area connections in the wireless conncection properties. If it works wired, then we know it is possible your router since your card works fine at your friends house's. So the first thing you can do is the firmware. After that, i might want to call tech support.

Apparently I have the current software for the 2Wire router. But what would I upgrade in terms of an Intel product?

The drivers for the Intel 1350 Card. Just go to there website and look for drivers. What about the firmware?

Should I download the firmware for the router on the computer that's connected to it?

And download the drivers for my 1350 card on my laptop?

There is a driver I found for the 1350, but it was released in 2004.

I can't find anything involving 'firmware' on the 2Wire website...

You need to do the drivers for the 1350 card on the laptop. I would just do the firmware on the laptop to make things easier. It doesnt matter for the firmware on any computer as long its on the same network that you want to upgrade.

with wireless and 1.6, I get between 50-100ms. I contacted Linksys about it and said that it was normal to get between 50-100ms.

What I don't get is that my friend has the same wireless internet with me, except he has a 2915 a/b/g, 1.73 Ghz PM, 128MB X300 and 1GB ram, yet he gets 30-50 ms at his house. When he comes to my house it's the same ping as mine, 60-100.

My house got that speed (30-50 ms)once though, what could be going on there?

It's a 2Wire router, whatever is provided with SBC Yahoo DSL. The only marking I could interpret as a model number would be a 1800GH Gateway. If you tell me to look elsewhere for a model number I'll do my best.

I downloaded that old driver (late 2004) for the 1350, but that didn't really do anything. I figured I have a more recent driver than that since I got this laptop 8/05

Ok, i would try the firmware first then if it doesnt work, try different drivers for the card.
http://www.2wire.com/?p=266 I assume your router (should be) the first one. So how do get the driver is go right a couple boxes and hit drivers. (The windows one). If this doesnt work, contact your ISP and tell them whats going on and more than likely get it replaced.

My mistake. I used a USB cable to connect from the PC to the router, and I'm downloading the appropriate driver now (the second one for first time installation).

    I'll give an update soon

I really cant help you when i dont know what your router is. Sorry but try just looking around yourself. You said 1800 and that goes with it. But try that driver anyways

Well I installed the second driver and nothing much has shown up. I'm going to try the first one now.

Everything is in order, except I'm having trouble with this step:

    STEP 2 - Wireless Configuration
    ===============================

    1. Run the program WirelessCfg.exe in the directory C:\TWWUSB_TEMP. You can do so by clicking on the Windows Start button and select Run. The Windows Start button is typically at the lower left corner of the screen. Type in C:\TWWPC_TEMP\WirelessCfg.exe to launch the program.

    2. Follow on-screen instruction to configure your wireless setting. Enter the serial number and encryption key as they are printed on the bottom of your 2Wire wireless gateway.

Do I use my laptop for this?

When I try to run WirelessCfg.exe I get this message:

A 2Wire wireless adapter cannot be found. Please insert your 2Wire wireless PC Card or USB adapter before starting the configuration utility.

The router is connected to my laptop via a USB cable, and my PC card is currently in the laptop. What am I doing wrong?

Thats a wireless adapter, please use the first thing listed on that page and hit the drivers that i asked you to do.

Is this just with the game or is your whole internet having issues?

    It's just with the game.

I downloaded the first driver like you asked me to and I still get that same error message when I try and access Wirelessconfig.exe (this was not included with the first driver)

Ah, looks like there might be some progress. I installed the 2Wire Wireless Card Utility, but it says 'Device not connected'

What do they need connected? I feel like I am doing everything they're asking.

The laptop is directly next to the router.

If all else fails, is it possible to just get a new router and use that for my own laptop while the rest of my family uses the original one?

If this is your ISP's router i would contact them and let them know the trouble you are having. They could possibly replace it.

The signal for my network is something like -60 dBm (it's a little lower than halfway on the bar). I'd post the print-screen but Geocities is down right now.

The channel also says 6. Aren't you supposed to be channel 1 or 11 for optimal performance, or am I mistaken?

How can I get the signal up?

Type your IP address onto a browsers bar, or 192.168.1.1 and you should be able to access the router, but if you cant you need to find your real IP address by just doing a google search or whatever. Then you type the password if any, and there should be an option to change the channel right there.

I changed the channels to both 1 and 11 and it is still very laggy.

Should I consider getting this router replaced?

Well I called the ISP and they said there was nothing wrong with the router. He suggested that I open some ports in my firewall and make sure nothing else is running in the background.

Does anyone know what ports need to be open for Counter Strike, and how I do it?
