My network connnection icons (wired and wireless) in the task bar are always showing as 'acquiring network address' with the dot moving between the two computers. They always acquire an ip address ok and work perfectly. Also ipconfig reports that everything is fine. My current OS is WinXP SP2. Is there anyway to fix this.

Do you have more than one network connection enabled (ie, wired and wireless)?

Try clicking on them and repairing them. Then try updating your firmware from your routers site. Its helpful to know what the equipment is that your using.

I know everything works fine. Its just that the icon looks annoying. Its saying that it acquiring the ip address but it already has. It does it everywhere I go (school, home and other places). The only way to get rid of it is to go to the Network Connection folder and hit refresh then it updates the taskbar icon to what it should be. I am just annoyed at always having to do that. It only happens on my laptop and not my desktop.

I'm pretty sure its not a setting. I have dealt with a lot of computers and this is the first time I have seen this. I have asked many people but no one knows. I believe it has something to do with the registry. I have looked all over the inetrenet but no answers.

Maybe just try reinstalling the wireless cards drivers and if any, the software controlling the card. So try that now and see how it goes. :p

See the problem is not only on my wireless network adapter its also on my NIC. I have no third party software controlling the wireless. I use Windows Wireless Zero. I have tried undating and reinstalling the drivers many times before but no luck. This has been going on for months now.

Heres a pic. The problem is highlighted in red. This thing never goes away until I hit refresh. Same for my other wired NIC. My wireless is Intel Wireless 2200 BG and the wired is Realtek.

Now after hitting refresh the moving dot goes away and the icon can show network connectivity.

Maybe reinstall XP Service Pack 2. There might have been an issue during a setup. It happens sometimes but that could be the next thing you try.

I redid my whole system and that solved the problem.
