My cousin has a Linksys Cisco Wireless-N Gigabit router, which his newer notebook connects to instantaneously. However, my 2-year-old notebook (HP dv2000t) will sometime take up to 10 minutes to connect to the internet. My notebook finds the router with no problem, but will sit as "Local Only" status for anywhere up to 10 minutes. Sometimes it will connect right away, sometimes it will take only 1 minute or 2, but most of the time at least 5 minutes. Why could this be? I connect to everyone else's internet just fine.

Check the router setting to "automatic" and notjust to "N" specific - something in that aspect in your router configuration.
cheers ... -
Under "Network Mode" there is: Mixed, BG-Mixed, Wireless-G Only, Wireless-B Only, Wireless-N Only, and Disabled. "Mixed" is the setting that is chosen. Elsewhere where there are settings that have "auto" as an option, they are already chosen.
By the way, it is a Linksys WRT310N Wireless-N Gigabit router (since I didn't have it listed previously). Could it be my computer that has the issue? Might I have to update my wireless card firmware/software or anything of that nature? -
Has your cousin limited network connections? Has he enabled MAC filtering or any other setting that will prevent any other computers from connecting?
-
He knows nothing of the router setup. A neighbor set it up for him and when I moved in, all I did was change the SSID from your standard LINKSYS to the current one. MAC filtering is disabled.

how many other wireless routers are visible? The dirtier the wireless environment, the tougher it gets to make and maintain a good connection.

Could try a static IP maybe, though I think when you have "Local Only" you should already have one
Taking too long to connect to Wireless N
