I'm having an issue with the 4965 in my T61p, whenever I transfer a file above 70 megs or so with it at speeds above 5MB/s or so, the laptop will either freeze completely, have everything flicker madly, freeze for 4 out of every 5 seconds, or will simply become unable to connect to any wireless network until a restart.

The issue has happened while using either access connection, intel proset wireless, or windows wireless zero config to control the card. when trying to troubleshoot the card after losing connection with proset, the troubleshooter was unable to get the status of the wireless radio. I've tried 2 different versions of the drivers from intel, and the ones from lenovo. I'm running XP pro.

    Anyone have advice?

Does the download finish successfully, or not? What wireless router(s) are you using?

I don't get the freezes, but I have had problems copying large files using the same wireless card, but on the Dell XPS 1530. Also I do get the disconnects then it refuses to see any wireless networks until I restart.

Sorry for getting this thread up again, but I have the same problem and couldn't find a solution yet. My T61p sometimes freezes completely when I am downloading something or just have high network traffic...

I had this same issue after installing the Intel 4965agn on my Dell XPS M1530. Large transfers would either lock up my system completely, or the card would completely disappear from the device manager (I'm assuming it or Windows shut itself down). I thought maybe it had to do with draft-N craziness, disabled 802.11n Mode on the card, but the issues persisted.

I was tearing out my hair over it until I found it might be related to overheating -- I reduced the power settings and voila! It worked. The inspiration came from this post:

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=328914

But I'll repeat my settings for prosperity:

    A) Reduced Transmit Power in the card's settings:

    1. Open up the Device Manager and find the 4965agn card under Network Adapters
    2. On the "Advanced" tab, select the "Transmit Power" property.
    3. Set the value to "3. Medium".
    4. Click "OK", your card will reset.

    B) Reduced Wireless Adapter Power Savings Mode in Windows Power Options*

    1. Open up Power Options and click "Change plan settings" under your currently selected plan.
    2. Click "Advanced Settings".
    3. Expand the "Wireless Adapter Settings > Power Savings Mode"
    4. Select "Maximum Power Saving" on battery, and "Medium Power Saving" for plugged in.
    5. Click "Apply"

    * use http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/CS-024509.htm for reference

I've been running a Mozy backup for the last day (something that definately killed my card before), and I've had no problems! I'm running Windows 7 but these instructions should work well for Vista as well.

Good luck! I hope this helps...

it makes sense. I had my keyboard off after just shutting down my laptop and felt the wifi card and was surprised how hot the thing was.

    Sounds reasonable.
I've changed my settings now and hope that this solves the problem. Thanks for bringing this solution up!
