I recently just got my new internet installed down here in Costa Rica and I've been having occasional problems (maybe 1-2 times per week) with my connection timing out. I have a Motorola SB5100 as a modem and I have it directly connected into my laptop. I'd say 95% of the time it works fine, but then it will time out and go down for a few hours.

As you might imagine, for a person who loves to use the internet this is a very frustrating thing. Especially when your in the middle of a skype call (I teach some English classes via skype) with a client, family member or friend. On top of that, I love gaming. So that also affects my Starcraft 2 games.

I've read up about this issue and it seems to be extremely common. And from what I've read, the majority of the time it is in the ISP's end. I've already done the troubleshooting for this particular model and I'm pretty sure it's not on my end. The only way that I can seem to fix the problem is if I go into the configuration of the modem and hit "Reset All Defaults" then usually (if I'm lucky) within 30 minutes to 1 hour it usually works again.

I called my ISP and talked to them about it and they basically told me to do all the troubleshooting that I already did from the instructions online so that did nothing for me. They were going to send out a tech, but the next day it was working fine so I called and canceled the appointment. I think tomorrow I will have to call again to arrange another appointment with the technician. Until then, do you guys have any other suggestions or ideas to help solve this problem? Have any of you have the same experience? Thanks in advance. Ciao.

What do you see in the modem log, and have you made a note of the signal levels before and after your reset?

I didn't take a shot of the log before the reset, but after the reset this is basically all that i'm getting...

You cropped the timestamps, are those all within the same couple of minutes?

Demand a new modem as long as it isn't a sporadic signal problem.
