is it better to switch off routers when not in use? because my other netgear router, i hardly switched it off and after 6 months, the connection always drops. i bought a new netgear router and i dont want make the same mistake.

btw, do yous know if warranty with netgear is covered because my connection keeps dropping.

i wouldnt switch the router off when not in use. just make it secure so no one else can use it. also, for the connection dropping, try changing its frequency channel to something else.

No, turning off your router is unnessecary, maybe the specific router you have is not a really good one. Look into getting a new one(i recromend trendnet) but netgear and d-link are good

Make sure you have the latest firmware. It correctes a lot of problems. Also look at your lease times. I have a isp that renews every 2 hrs. My old provided did it every 2 days. Netgear renews the lease time every 1/2 cycle. So a 2hr lease time will renew in 1 hr. If it continues to drop have it replaced 3yr warranty on most. My FVS338 had a problem with a 4 day (2 day) it would only work one cycle. Upgrade to the latest firmware (v2) correct the problem.

I never turn off any of my hardware, runs 24/7 on ups units.

generally, ALL netgear routers are pieces of crap. i speak from experience.

get a Linksys WRT54GL, it runs on linux. its bug free, can be loaded with awesome custom firmware that can be tweaked infinitely. doesnt come close to getting even WARM, unlike all of the heat problems almost all netgears have.

i've had mine for well over a year now, its never dropped or disconnected, or had any hiccups. the only time its ever been shut off is when i painted the room its in.
