When I am using my laptop, I can use the wireless connection to access my shared files on my desktop computer. If I keep my computer on, and hook up to a wired connection, I am denied permission to see my desktop. The same thing happens if I start out using a wired connection and try to go to wireless.

Internet use is not affected. I can use internet under both the above mentioned circumstances.

I have a D-Link DIR-655 router, laptop specs listed below. I use Vista 32 bit on the desktop. Can someone please tell me where to look to fix this? I hope I explained this so it's easy to understand.

You most likely won't be able to convert your laptop into what's called a multihomed computer because, in general, laptop makers build into the BIOS a function that cuts off the wireless connection when the wired connection is plugged in.

    Maybe I didn't make sense

    1) Laptop is hooked up to network with a cable.
    2) I can see my shares on my desktop over the network.
    3) I unplug the network cable.
    4) I no longer have access to my shares on my desktop, but internet runs fine, and I can log into my router via wireless.
    5) Reboot.
    6) I can see my shares on my desktop through the wireless connection.
    7) I plug in a network cable
    8) I am denied access to my desktop computer, internet is fine, I can log into router however.

It's hard to explain. Someone out there must know what I'm talking about.

Is file sharing enabled on both the laptop and desktop?

Ahh, I see what your problem is now. I am assuming that if you just unplug the ethernet wire, reboot, and plug the ethernet wire back in, you have no problem accessing the shares on the desktop, correct?

Just as a test, what happens if, after you plug the ethernet wire back in in step (7), you delete the shares that are on the machine and then re-establish the shares?
