if the wireless network is 4 miles away, then you might only get a very faint signal that will keep on disconnecting. And besdes, the network at McDonanlds could be encrypted with WEP/WPA.

I just recommend getting your own router.

why are you paying for dialup? broadband is pretty much the same $ now. get your own subscription and don't be a thief.

Broadband might be the same as dialup if you live in town. If you're in the boondocks like me and many others, it can cost 3-5 times dialup, if available at all.

He's not being a thief, he's just trying to make use of nearby facilities.

it is still looks doubtful to me....I don't see the point in this. the antenna thing is relatively expensive and maybe be more cost effective to get a ADSL connection like everyone has suggested. Some providers even provide you with a wireless router.

"...he's just trying to make use of nearby facilities."

I doubt that McD's set up the wireless network for the benefit of the entire neighborhood. If it's a T-mobile or similar hot-spot, and you are paying the monthly T-mobile fee, fine, but if it's a free network for the temporary use of McD's customers while in the store, it's stealing bandwidth, plain and simple.

i feel your pain, but sadly, if that's how much it costs, then that's how much it costs... it doesn't justify shady behavior.

also, 0.4 miles from a mickey d's doens't sound like the boondocks to me.
