I am in the process of buying a new laptop and I am wanting to do wireless internet. I am going to be getting rid of my desktop. I would greatly appreciate if I could get some suggestions on what would be best to go with for a beginner to get my wireless internet up and going and secured?

    Thanks

l'd suggest a dlink router. l have two of them; a wired and a 802.11G (forget model #'s) and neither of them have given me problems. l didn't have to install anything on my pc for them to work, it was simply plug the cables in and it's been fine.

Well might as well make it a trifecta....The LinkSys WRT54G is one of the easiest routers to use. I have set several of these up and have had no issues.

Linksys is very difficult to setup compared to others. I would go with netgear for a beginner

I'll third Netgear. My WGR614 has served me faithfully for about 2 years now. Was one of the easiest pieces of equipment I've ever set up. Have heard good things from others about Linksys, but from personal experience setting up my mother-in-law's Linksys was kind of a pain compared to the Netgear. But then again, it was one of those cheap router/wireless card bundles she purchased on clearance, so maybe it wasn't one of the better ones.

I have a CompUSA router. I had a friend help me set that one up, as well as the one at my parents' house., so I can't comment on ease of setup. They both work well, though. :::Shrugs:::

Well I have narrowed it down to two routers.
The Netgear WGR614 as many of you suggested.
    And the Netgear WGR624.

The WGR624 seems like it may have a little better security? Is it worth the extra money?

I'd go with the Netgear WGR624

Its an updated version of the WGR614, and it has a lot more security features, and not to mention its Super G ready (108Mbps as compared to 54Mbps)

But those speeds will only be seen with a netgear internal wireless card.

So in all, WGR624 is the way to go

    I meant the WGT624.
I was kind of off on my letters.
