I've found numerous posts like this around the internet, but they haven't really come to any conclusions.

I am dual-booting Ubuntu 8.10 and Windows XP, and I have an Intel mini wireless-n card installed. My internet works just fine in Ubuntu, but when I power up XP it fails to work. I have a wireless signal and can connect to my home network, but I can't get access to the internet. I had this problem since the very moment I installed Windows, and once managed to fix it by doing ipconfig /release /renew, unplugging the modem/router, and then putting it back in. While I was downloading some Steam things overnight, the internet cut out, and doing the ipconfig and modem trick didn't work. Is there anything else I should try or anything in the config settings that might be affecting my internet?

    Thanks in advance,
    Romanian

Please list your laptop's make and model, the wifi card make and model, the operating system (XP has three service packs, and also has Home and Pro versions - which one are you using and which SP?), and the current driver.

Clevo M570RU, 3945ABG/4965AGN WLAN. Windows XP Media Center, SP1. Current driver 1.11 ( from here).

This has happened on another older laptop in the house as well, but it was fixed.

Assuming you don't have the same problems while flying with Ubuntu 8.10, i'd say a sudden cut-off of the internet connection leads me to the followin questions:
    - can you ping your router / DNS server ?
    - when resetting the router, your IP still has no access?
    - If so change DHCP range @ router and try again
    - any other history of side-effects (blue screen, hangups)

I remember there is a way to reset the TCP/IP protocol stack to default values using
    $dosprompt: netsh int ip reset

If a reset helps, there is/was something very wrong down there in the stack.

    addendum to Nomad's post

    netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt

You need to include the "c:\resetlog.txt" at the end for windows xp

    1) Yes
    2) Correct
    3) ?
    4) If I go into sleep mode twice, the second time I wake it blue-screens me; possible memory error.

zfactor: I just did /release /renew, but after just resetting everything this morning to make it work, I guess it wasn't ipconfig but rather resetting that made it work.

    IPConfig.txt
    Resetlog.txt

I managed to make it work again this morning by unplugging both modem and router for a minute, then putting them back in. It's still really ticking me off though, having to do this every time I want to use Windows XP internet.

Thanks for the link to the updated driver.

Our desktop which is hooked up via LAN had no internet for about 3 days, so we unplugged and re-plugged everything today. Solved the desktop's problem, but now my laptop has no connection.

The problem still persists; no other ideas?

Are you using encryption on the network?
    WEP + Wireless N = exactly that you're seeing.

What brand of modem and router are you using, and how old are they?
