I am trying to figure out the best way to stream video files (MKV) located on a NAS (DNS-321) to a remote computer over the Internet.

The Internet connection where the NAS is located has more than sufficient bandwidth to stream video (100Mb/s up/down via fiber).

Right now I am limited to only the NAS for hardware - I do not have any other computers on site to run any special software (i.e., VideoLAN) to stream video.

The only thing I can think of is to set up a VPN...would this work? I haven't set up a VPN before but my understanding is that it would allow me to access the network as if it were local.

    Any other suggestions?

unless your nas has the capability to establish a vpn and share disk over a tunnel, you might be stuck.

some home routers/firewalls can manage vpn end points, but those devices that can also manage shared disk and expose that over the internet are few, possibly zero.

there are any number of unsafe ways to do this, but I'll assume you have no interest in those.......

I suppose I'd be interested in at least hearing of any way to accomplish this, safe or unsafe.
