I run a Dell Inspiron 1520 with Vista. If I'm downloading a large file but need to be on the move at the same time, how do I keep my connection open when I close my laptop? I'm assuming it goes into sleep mode, but it closes my wireless connection everytime I close the laptop. Is there any way to configure sleep mode to keep my connection open, or is there another mode I can set the laptop to?

Go to your power settings and make sure your computer doesn't go into standby when you close the lid. I'm using XP but I assume there is the option in vista too.
