I used to play starcraft broodwars on battle.net just fine with an old, non-wireless linksys router (the common blue one, I dont know the exact model).

I recently upgraded to the LInksys WRT54GX and the problems with broodwars and battle.net started. I can log onto Battle.net and join game lobbies normally, but every time the game starts, I get dropped ("lag out") 3 seconds into the game. The wierd thing is, I play other games, such as Warcraft 3 on battle.net just fine.

The only thing different between before and after the battle.net problems started is the Linksys WRT54GX router, which convinces me that the solution lies in the router. I have tested this problem using a wireless connection and a grounded connection, in both cases the problem persists.

An OBVIOUS and common solution people have given me (many times) is to open the correct ports using the website www.portforward.com. Let me assure you that the port forwarding aspect is set up correctly.

Partial solution: One solution I found was that when I host a battle.net game, the problem dissapears. Also, if I am playing a game that involves only one other human player than myself, the problem is also gone.

Are there any complete solutions out there?

Are you connected wirelessly, or via a wire? Try the other way ;) Have you updated to the latest firmware for your router?

I haven't had any experience with with the WRT54GX, but there have been a lot of changes at Linksys since you bought your wired router. They were bought by Cisco, have changed their base chips many times (a WRT54G has multiple different processors, memory amounts and even operating systems, depending on the version you get). It's safe to say everything has changed between your new router and the old one... so let's just concentrate on what the new one is doing.

I have tested it both using wires and wirelessly. I also have the latest firmware (as of 3 days ago).

Well, IMO, this is an excellent router. It even looks really cool. I have had no problems whatsever with this router except for this starcraft + battle.net business. Heck, even other non-starcraft battle.net games work!

    This is wierd!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Its probably the ports - that was a big problem I had a while back with many wireless routers.

Try to run a DMZ and see if that fixes it. I had to do this along time ago when port forwarding didnt work for me. Just rely on your software protection and firewall instead of your routers. It will still protect your IP.

Or daisy chain it into another router.

Yeah DMZ is pretty handy in my experiences with some other online video games. I have tried turning on DMZ for my computer's IP, but the problem still persists.

I have been searching on the internet about this problem. It turns out there are a lot of people that share my problem with running starcraft broodwars on a new system and a new router. However, I was unable to locate a solution to any of these problems.

Well it figures, since starcraft was made before home routers were invented (I think) and before DSL got popular. But I cant give up! I know there is a solution out there!
