When using my notebook as a desktop replacement, I like to be logged on to Instant Messenger all the time. However, the computer goes on standby, which terminates my internet connection. How do I fix this? And, also, can I run a screen saver but still stay online? I have a Toshiba Satellite M-65, if that's of importance.

    Thank you...

Go into power management options in the control pannel and set the standby for however long you're usually gone away for (1,2,3,5, forever hour ). In addition, right clicking on the desktop will bring you up to your screensaver settings. From there you can set when you would like the screensaver to initiate.

Yes - set the standby to not go off for however long you're away - that should do the trick.

    EDIT:
    How to get into PowerManagement:
    1. Go to "Start" and click on it
    2. Click on the "Control Panel" in the right column
    3. Find "Power Options" and click on that
    4. From there, you can set the standby time/time before turning off monitor/hibernation

    follow up:

if you use AMDvIntel's instructions, you can also set your LCD to just turn off instead of using a screensaver, this will save some battery life as power to the LCD will be cut and you'll get the same effect as a blank screensaver

also, if you want to close the lid, make sure the option to "standby on lid close" is disabled.
