    hi
I have a 3 year old Acer aspire 1511 (Amd athlon 3000) XP, which downloads
at speeds of 600kbps and uploads at around 420kbps. This is from my
8MB/512 connection using a sagem 800 usb modem.

    Everything is absolutely fine.

I have just purchased a brand new Acer TM5520 with Amd TL-58 and XP Pro. I have deleted Norton Trial, but nothing else. But this lappy when connected in just the same way, on the same sagem modem, same server, everything will only dowload at 900kbps, although it does UPLOAD at the same 420kbps as the old Aspire.

The new Acer has 802.11b/g WLAN

When I look at DrTCP it shows the network adaptor being used is the Yukon Ethernet, and I cannot make it change.

Any obvious answers to this problem appreciated

So what seems to be the problem? That the new laptop only downloads at 900kbps? What do you want it to be at?

Obviously you're limited by the server you're downloading from... It doesn't matter how good of a connection you have, and how good of a wireless card you have, if the person you're downloading from has a crappy bandwidth, then you're only gonna be able to download at whatever speed they have. You hardware is not gonna make up for the lack of bandwidth the guy has.

Tone it down, newbie. If you want help, remember to use good manners and that, in fact, quite a few people who frequent and post here do not have a mastery of the English language because it isn't their primary language.

You are absolutely positive about the download speed reported on the old laptop? Have you used different applications installed on the laptop to "clock" the download speeds? Have you compared all of the network settings on both computers to see if the new laptop is configured correctly? Have you asked for assistance from Acer or any Acer specific websites (or the Acer board on this forum)?

*Edit: I see you did ask the exact same question on the Acer board. Posting the same question on two boards is called cross-posting, and is generally frowned upon. Pick one and stick with it.

hi again.sorry for sharpness of may last reply.

    1) I have used variuos speed test places to compare the 2 lappies.

    2) www.testmy.net and www.speedtest.net.being my normal

    3) The old lap reports DL of around 6000kbps and upload of around 400
on both sites, everytime I use them. This has also been confirmed while
downloading test file from my server in Portugal. (sapo)

    4) When I got the new one I installed the same USB modem and went on
line. Firstly it seemed slower so I went to my server file to download
    their test file.

    5) Every test I have done including downloading directly from my server
confirms a massive difference in DOWNLOAD speeds. Uploading returns
more or less the same speeds of 410kbps, on EVERY SPEED TEST.

    6) I have used DRTCP in the past to maximise net speeds and installed
that on the new lappy. I have increased the tcp recieve window to the
    same as the old.
    7) The only thing i cannot change on the new lappy is the ADAPTOR
SETTING.....which insists on remaining at Marvel Yukon ethernet
despite me trying to change it. I have disabled that connection but
still it reverts to that as soon as I reboot. the old lappy shows a Adaptor setting using MICROSOFT TV/Video. My new lappy also has this option showing but will not save that setting.

    8) I have talked with both ACER and my server. Neither addepts ANY
responsibilty, Acer say as long as the new lappy connects then it must be a host problem, the server SAPO say because my old laptop connects at full speed then the prob must lay with the hardware...checkmate

    9) I find it strange that the upload speeds are both the same.
    10) And wonder if it has something to do with the adaptor settings, the new lappy has wi fi connection which i have also disabled, as I only use USB
but Dr TCP will not let me use the WLAN connection

I would appreciate any help in this. I have screen caps of the various
    test centres I have used

You can disable the wireless card and the gigabit ethernet port in the BIOS. Boot into your BIOS, find the internal wireless card and the ethernet port, and disable both. When you reboot, Windows will not even see the those connections.

    update
i have tried to uninstall the Marvel Yukon Ethernet in device manager
which it does and then DrTCP immediately reverts to the same one as my old Acer....MIcrosoft TV/video connection.
Prob is when i reboot it auto reinstalls the Marvel yukon and I`m back where i started.
How do i get rid of this connection and any other connections

I just and only want to connect with a USB modem.....why should there be all this garbage on a pc if you dont want it??

Why are you using a USB connection to you modem? If you have ethernet use it, you will get better performance.

As far as optimizer the only one that has worked for me is cablenet. Download the optional pack for more settings.

As for norton did you just delete it or uninstall it. And did you download the utility to actually remove it from your NB. Norton leaves tons of garbage behind and the only way to remove it is with their uninstall utility. I hate any program that does not know what uninstall means.

The yukon should not be causing you any problems. You can disable it in the system hardware profile.

    Hi there

    1) I use a usb modem because I am liable to electricity cuts and at least I do not loose web connection when that happens with a USB.
    2) In addition my ISP can only give 8MB connection MAX . In the Algarve in Portugal there is NO alternative than to use the national Phone company!!!!!
and I guess they cant be bothered to up the speeds. I have badgered them weekly as I used to pay (like everyone else) for 8MB but only ever got 2.5 download speed. ie 35€ per month (thats 50$ per month and you are limited
to 5gig INTERNATIONAL download. ie non Portuguese web sites !!!!!!!!!
There are no worthwhile Poruguese web sites!!!!!!). But anyway somehow they increased the speeds to this line only, (it actually used to say connected at 4MB despite paying for 8MB) but now it says I am connectede at 8MB and they gave me an ethernet modem, but that would only get me about 4mb, so i asked for a usb one, when i connected it the DL speeds immediatley increased to around 6.5/7MB.
    2) Yes I uninstalled Norton with their utility.
    3) Even tho I disable Yukon in Device manager and I have deleted the drivers
    it reappears on reboot!!!!!
    4) Havent tried cablenet.

Sorry for long answer but maybe you can see my choices do have a reason and dl at 7MB is quite fast enough for me
    thanks
    Any suggestions apprecdiated

What are you using for a browser, IE or FF or Other? The reason I ask my service when I switched over to FIOS was only show slow with FF ok with IE. Running Cablenut fixed every thing.

    Hi
I always use FF virtually never IE.

I have downloaded a TCP optimizer, again where yo can change settings, better than Dr TCP, a few more settings, but everything I have already set is what it suggests i should have.......but still no improvement.
The only thing I can think of is some sort of conflict with the ethernet or other connection as the upload speed is exactly the same with both lappys.
    What do you reckon.??

I will get the cablenut and see what that can do

You know, you could help a future Acer owner if you explain what your ISP told you.
