    To the networking gurus here,

I have a problem with bandwidth becoming by half when use wireless connection for both PCs.

This is for bandwidth between Desktop and laptop. I used to have Router/Desktop, Linux server downstairs and connected directly to router by ethernet cable.

I used to get bandwidth around 3.5MB/sec( Mega bytes, not mega bits) to 5 MB/sec if I use Super G with D-Link card.

Since I have moved Linux Server and Router to upstairs, I have to use Wireless Card for my desktop. Now the bandwidth suddenly became half( between 1.2MB/sec to 1.5MB/sec). But if I use direct ethernet cable with the lappie for testing, I can get 3.5MB/sec.

So, I am wondering why it became half of what it used to be? Is it supposed to be?
I was thinking it should not drop as individually each Wireless card can do 3.5MB/sec( if other one is wired), it should maintain same. But I am clueless. ( Thought still not bad for streaming)

Here is my set up for your advise.

    Desktop PC:
    Wireless Device: D-Link DWL-G650 ( Super G PCMCIA card)
    Location: downstairs
    Signal strength: Good to Verygood

    Laptop:
    Broadcom Speed Booster Wireless G
    Location: upstairs
    Signal Strength: Excellent

    Linux Server:
    Wired 100MBPS connection to router
    Location: upstairs

    Router:
    D-Link DI-624 ( Super G Router)

    Router Options:
WEP 64 Bit encryption, MAC Filtering, Static IPs to Desktop and Linux Server

Options tried on router during testing

    Super G -Enabled and disabled,
    Turbo off and on
    Extended Range: off and on
    Wireless G only Enabled

BTW, I can NOT run ethernet cable.

Well the speed is going to drop depending on interferance. Are you talking about from computer to computer speeds...or from the net?

I think I mentioned between 2 PCs. ( nothing to do with internet).

If you think interference, what and why whould be that, because in both cases two wireless clients are on, but ofcourse in one case there is no active data transfer(when I am using wired on laptop).

Well when you moved it upstairs...it would actually depend on what electronics, how many walls...electrical mains are between the wireless connection and the router.

I had the same problem when I moved my router to my living room when I first had it. It reported a very good connection, but I got slow speeds.

Nick will be able to clarify this more. :)

Hmm, But that is the case even when I am beside router with my laptop. But when I connect my laptop router( Desptop is still downstairs) using Ethernet cable I get 3.5MB/sec bandwidth again. So, bandwidth dropping may not be because of distance to Desktop PC.

But what I was wondering is, since Router has to handle thru put by wireless with 2 PCs at once, does it reduce bandwidth by half?

I have tried few more scenarios, I am getting full signal to two PCs( laptop and desktop) and both are running at full 54MBPS speed.

I also monitored link speed when testing( I am testing bandwidth with Sandra), but it still staying at full speed(monitoring with D-Link software).

If any one PC is connected to router with cable, I am getting full bandwidth, but when both are running on wireless, my bandwidth is getting half. Is it expected. Can any one run some tests with their setup and let us know please!!?
