So I found this site www.wugnet.com and they have a free speed test. Just curious to how others may fair.

    ISP: COMCAST
LAPTOP: on wireless G Linksys (1000 kbps Download/400 kbps Upload)
Desktop: ethernet to Lynksys (1300 kbps Download/460 kbps Upload)

This a typically difference between 2 systems? I thought my router was too slow... but it looks like my service is. I should be hitting up to 3000 kbps on the line.

    Comcast is normally 6mbps up.

Download CableNut and aux pack then select the settings that best respersents your connection. And see if that helps.

You can't get anywhere close to 6mbps from Comcast in my area.
    Try this ...
    http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks
Click on the start button under the Java Tweak Tool.
It will point out the weakness in the your computer's TCP stack.

I tried several free speed test sites over the weekend and I found that the download and uplink speeds depend on the latency between you and the server used to conduct the speed test. I also have comcast cable and i regularly get 6-8Mb download and 1.7Mb upload

Wireless will not give you true speed readings. Used wired to confirm.

But on my Desktop, i can download at least 3 mb/s

But yeah, in my sig, you will see that i too, can not upload at 10 megs/s like what i pay for.

Well... as it turned out my modem was not DOCSIS2 compatible. I am now up to 6 Mb/s for my laptop (wireless, 128 bit encry) where I was at 1.8. My desktop now is over 6 Mb/s. Comcast came in a changed the modem out.

I usually use speakeasy speedtest, but I'll give speedtest.net a try.

Speedtest.net is a joke. :p For those of you that don't know, I'm in Taiwan. I ran it to a San Fransisco server and got 172kbps download and 52upload. I just ran speakeasy.net's speed test and got 3072 download and 792 upload. I have a 10Mb/s fiber optic connection. Locally I usually get between 9 and 12Mbps. I guess speedtest.net only works well from the US...

I started out using this for the test. This was my benchmark to gauge how the modem worked before and and after it was swapped out. Speakeasy was used by the comcast tech, but I did not have data from that service.
