    Sony Vaio wireless problem

    Hi
    Sony VGN-NR285E laptop using VISTA Home Premium with SP1, with a Linksys WRT54GS.
    The system has been working well for the past month. Yesterday on startup it would not recognize that the wireless switch was on. On initial flashup the WiFi light is illuminated, I get a visual indication on the system tray icons that it is connecting then the WiFi light goes off and I get an X on the icons. When I try to connect to a network it only displays ethernet connections and doesn't detect any wireless ones which I know are out there. It keeps telling me to switch on my wireless button. Most frustrating. Help anyone?

    First reboot the modem & router. Power cycle each. Give it enough time till all of the leds return to normal.

    Then check to see if your wireless LED is on. If not find out which key turns it on and off. Then turn it on.

    Thanks. I did all that. As far as I know there is no key that activates the wireless. There is a switch on the left hand corner of the keyboard that is in the on position. what is truly aggrivating is that when you turn on the machine, the wireless light is illuminated and the intial connection icons indicate a proper linkage then the light goes out and the icons are X'ed.

    Tried to. The closest I got was a startup utility. I pressed Del which works on my desktop, that just got me to Vista OS or a memory test. I'm going to try going to a restore point a day before this all happened.

    A few days ago I installed VISTA SP1. When I tried to run the restore points they all failed. Any suggestions, anyone?

    THE SOLUTION
    Go to the VAIO Smart Network icon in the system tray and right click and select show main window. Left click on the WLAN button. Wireless connectivity restored.

    Hi, I've got a VAIO VGN-NR310E doing the same thing for a couple months. The wireless doesn't work after you shut off, restart, or allow the computer to sleep. I have to uninstall the driver and restart, then it'll work till the next time. It will work if I shut the wireless off prior to letting it sleep, but never if I restart or shutdown. I've tried to find a newer driver, which I did, but the issue stayed the same. In the last few days, a windows update showed up for this wireless card. It changed the behavior, and it's kinda better now, but the "rules" are not consistant. Sometimes the same tricks work, sometimes not, sometimes it works when I restart, sometimes not. I have discovered the wireless works if I restart is safe mode with network support. If I try the solution JWH posted above, I have no WLAN button, so it won't work.

    Any ideas?

    I had a similar problem on my vaio (SR-190E) on Vista, checked the wireless switch - and it wouldn't turn on (LED indicator OFF) even after my attempts to restart the switch (turn off then on). I tried to disable and then enable the Hardware (wifi adapter) through Device Manager, but nothing came of that.
    Attempted a restart of my machine, still the same problem - LED indicator remained off. Went to my network connections and disabled, then enabled the Wireless connection. That seemed to pop up a dialog saying the wireless switch was off and that I should click on a button to turn it on. Clicked the button and voila, the LED indicator is ON and my wifi is back up and running.

    Stupid Vista and stupid Sony and their ISSUES !!!
