I sent my laptop (Sony VAIO VGN-NS30E) to be repaired (hard drive and keyboard needed to be replaced)

Just got it back today and now the wireless connection switch will not light up and it won't recognize any networks.

When I went into Device Manager it says there's a problem with the Network Controller and the Base System Device, so I tried to reinstall them. It tells me that it can't find the drivers because there's some problem with them...and I have no idea what it is!

The internet will only connect with a ethernet cable but I need to get the wireless fixed asap. Does anyone know what the problem is or how I could fix it?

I've looked at other threads on the forum but haven't been able to find anything that helps yet.

    Thank you!

Did you try restoring system (assuming there's a some kind of a hidden partition or recovery DVDs)? It's going to take less time-consuming than looking for an actual reason.

Thanks for the suggestion. I don't have any recovery DVDs but I can try a regular system restore maybe...

Try a system restore. If that does not work I would do a backup of everything and put it back to factory condition to see if this solves the problem.

EASY FIX: Bottom right of screen - click on green multi-wave icon that faces right - this is the smart wifi utility. Open it up. Toggle WIFI from OFF to ON. The light on the switch will go back on. Might need to do periodically, so right it down. Works everytime. Was just hard to find this.

Hi mate don't want to highjack your post but I think I'm getting the exact same problem with the same machine. I just reinstalled windows vista due to some malware issues. I can't even see the wifi network card in device manager. I have installed the intel drivers that are available. They have an intel diagnostic program which says the drivers are not compatible but can't seem to change them to one that system recognises or wants to use. I have the exact same issues with network and base system controller that you are seeing. Same as you I connect via ethernet but no wifi available. I have an unknown device under the same heading as the base system device. Do you have any of these issues as well? Do you know what wifi card is on this laptop?

thanks and hope we both get it sorted soon

Hi, I am having issues with my VAIO VPCYB35AN WiFi switch as well. I brought it couple of days earlier from a local retailer. I got the laptop with Windows 7 starter which I didn't like. I was fiddling around with the options when I saw this Smart Network Utility. It had two options, Bluetooth and WiFi. Since I wasn't going to use either for the time being, I switched them off from the software. I then did a clean install of Windows 7 Ultimate. I did not create any backup disks as I assumed that most of the drivers would be supported out of the box in 7 and the rest I would just download from the website. Well most of the drivers were installed by default, including the WiFi driver, except the display driver. However, to my shock, I couldn't get the WiFi working even though Windows showed that the Atheros drivers were installed. I still did a driver update, Sony's page had the one and only driver for my laptop which was for WiFi. However, nothing happened. I tried installing the Smart Network utility from the downloads page for my laptop but guess what, there was a link to the description page but no download! I installed the utility from some other VAIO page, assuming the utility must be common for all. But still no results. Question is, what else have I got to install to make that damn switch do something? Everything else is in place, services are running, no false registry entries, no lan utilities running.
