    Hi,

I have a Sony Vaio VGN-NR38M laptop and when I try to connect to the internet through my wireless connection, I'm only able to get a 'local only' connection. This is the first time this has happened since I purchased the laptop about three years ago. Other devices can use the router and connect to the internet by doing so, and my laptop will connect to the internet by using the Ethernet cable.

Any idea on how I can repair the wireless network and be able to connect to the internet through a wireless connection?

Check what's your gateway in connection details.
Also make sure that your IP is set to dynamic DHCP (that's assuming that is the correct setting)
