Well, I set-up my Linksys wireless router as I soon to plan on getting a laptop, I wanted to make sure everything still works. Good thing I did so.
I have no connection at all.
All lights are on on both modem and router, but nothing.
I hooked everything up right, and checked... nothing.
    I also tried " ipconfig /release " and then " ipconfig /renew " Nothing.
I tried connecting my PSP and it connected, then tried seconds later and got nothing, besides a "DNS".

Did you try shutting down your firewall?

On? I first thought Windows, but that wouldn't stop my PSP from connecting Wi-Fi. (Maybe if would, I don't know) Also my Windows firewall never stopped it before though. And like I said unless its the firewall in the router it self, I don't have any other one. Thanks Zaz foir your reply. :)

I just ordered my laptop, and it should be here 8-9 days. Some help is now really needed so I can connected it via. wireless once I got it, if not I can still haul out the wired router, but whats the fun in that.

Edit: Heres a pic of what I got, after disabling Windows Firewall.
(I tried to enable the Gateway, but nothing would happen)

The Windows firewall doesn't stop anything from going out I believe. Perhaps a card driver or router firmware update will help.

Hmmm, Thanks for that. But can you maybe go into greater detail? Or something.

If you need something from me, let me know and I'll do my best to get it for you.

Some games require additional port to be open. You will need to know what ports the game uses.

Example. You start a game up, it goes out on port 556 to the game server. The game server then open 2 additional ports. The 2 ports will be blocked by the firewall. So you need to setup a application rule in the router security/firewall. So when it sees outgoing 556 it automatically opens a range for the other 2 ports to use. This way your system firewall is still intact with only a few holes in it.

Unless you want your system hacked I would not recommend killing the firewall, keep it on and just open the needed ports.

what exactly is your network setup? what devices are trying to access the network? there are a lot of variables, it would help if you could try to connect to the router via an ethernet cable to see if the problem is with the routing itself or the wireless radio portion of the router.

    Ok.
I got it set up like:
Modem > Router > Computer (tried PSP with wireless) - (neither connect)
I havent done nothing with the settings as it always works without it, but I can certainly try the disc I got with it.
Also, That picture shown was one that I took once I connected the router. I still get no connection though, I just thought posting that picture might help a little.

Did you try resetting your modem?
Definitly would use the cd though. It's a piece of cake that way.

Ok, Did you clone your mac address of the computer used to setup the service with your ISP into the router? A lot of services are tied to that address. Once it is in the router everything should start working.

    Report back on your findings.

The best thing to do is to hook a computer directly to the router with an ethernet cable for the initial setup.

If it's at factory defaults, it should automatically assign an IP address to that computer, then you can log in to the internal setup to make changes.

You should verify that your router is getting an IP address from your ISP, if it is, then you should be able to access the internet. If not, then your ISP is probably expecting to see a different device on the connection, which it distinguishes with the MAC address. Go to whatever computer was connected to the modem before, and get it's MAC addy, which should be in the network connection status info under windows. Like blue68 said, you're going to have to clone this address in the router configuration.

After that, it should work fine. Then it's just a matter of configuring the wireless portion correctly.

AI was bored last night, So I went ino the Router Settings page.

There was a thing called "clone MAC Add." So I did it, I then also while on this page went to a different spot and did "release IP (Then Renew)"... I then got a connection has I am on it now and it seems to be working fine, I also got a connection on my PSP fine. 100% Signal Strength.

I moved my router, up onto a shelf a little higher than my PC hoping for these 2 things.
    Better wireless signal
    Keep Router cooler.
    Will it do that?

Also, How long should the router last? I've had it for about 3-4 months of more off use than on, and the person that bought it new before me only had it for 2 months, and even then it wasn't used.

It should last long, as the temperatures here are pretty low, and I dont plan on ever touching the router for anything, it should be just fine.
    Comments?

Glad to see the clone mac worked. This seams to be over looked quite often.

Wireless hardware should last a long time provide they get don't over heat. I have hardware that is close to 10 yrs old still working. So it's going to be a hit miss thing, most should last at a min 3-5 yrs. But you may upgrade them as new tech come out. It will be late in 2007 before the 11n is ratified, at the earliest. Then all of the early beta testers can look at replacing what the have. I dought they learned anything from the 11b to 11g process.

I don't see what was so funny.
But yup, I am glad that I now got my network working, and I will have my laptop friday and can write me review, and try everything out!
