Well I am pretty new to this new wireless connections and I just got my new laptop. I really don't know what to do about it. It is the hp dv2047cl, I got it at a SAMS. It seems to be that the internet is SLOOOW, me and my roomate got the roadrunner and it doesn't seem to work on my computer. Everything that I do on it when I am surfing is slow. the webpages don't open up as fast as my friends computer, and it is a shame because his computer is a lot older than mine. Also How much GB's are you supposed to have free after you set the computer up? because as of now I haven't really downloaded a lot of things and I only have about 43GB left of space. Any suggestions on what I should do? is my internet configured wrong or what???? I just can't figure it out. any help will be great! thanx

How big was the hard drive supposed to be? usually companies install a lot of "bloatware" on their machines to make them cheaper. This takes up space and really slows down the computer. Also, often manufacturers usually put a restore partition on the hard drive rather than include the CD. Both of these things take capacity. Also, a GB is technically 1024 MB, but HP/Dell/everyone uses 1000MB=1GB. This is easier on your head when you are doing the math, but robs space, especially on larger drives.

To give you an idea I had ~60 gigs of 80 free when I first got my e1505, after deleting all of the restore partitions and reformatting the hard disk I had 73 GB free. Now i'm using a t60, and the same thing is true.

As far as the networking goes-is your roommate also connecting wirelessly? There are many issues regarding wireless: distance, interference, signal drop-off...What kind of wireless card you have. It is possible you need to change the channel on your router/change some settings on your wireless card.

    More information would be helpful

    Cheers

My HD space is 100GB. So how do I get all of that free space back? Are all the other things that you deleted not useful?

My roomate is connecting through the cable straight up but we already tried connecting wirelessly and it seems to be working at the same speed, if not a little slower. the wireless card that I have is the 802.11 b/g wireless LAN. I hope you know what I mean by slow web surfing, it takes the computer a long time to open up a web page which doesn't really have much things in it. Like google, I type it in the address bar and go to it, but it just seems like it doesn't open it as fast as it should. Even on the internet we use at the University I attend, the internet cannot get any faster and still my computer acts up. I noticed that sometimes by computer starts up faster at times and slower at times, why is this? Do you think there is something wrong with my notebook? I really don't know how to configure the network card settings, because I don't understand what everything is for. any idea of what's going on? thanx for the help man... I appreciate it.

Wow.. only 43 gigs/100...that's quite a lot of garbage. I'm not sure how to go about reformatting a hp, to preserve any special features, but you might want to physically make sure you have a 100 gig drive by pulling it out and looking at the sticker. As far as the wireless issue, I am not real sure.. I will give it some thought and try to get back to you.

since this is a new laptop, i personally recommend downloading cCleaner and go thru the start-ups to see which apps or process that u can switch off/disable
a check on ur firewall /virus scanner could be helpful (norton and macafee seem to slow down system performance quite a bit)

some good reads as how u can spruce up the performance
    http://mywebpages.comcast.net/SupportCD/OptimizeXP.html
    http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm#Services

check to see if your hard drive has more than one partition, sometimes it comes with C: and D: and "hidden recovery" partitions

there r many tools out there to help speed up ur intenet performance (cablenut, drtcp ...)
just by cleaning up ur startups apps and services, u would already see a big jump in the performance

    cheers ...
