When I connect to my netgear r6250 ac access point on my aorus x3 laptop with the intel 7260, I get around 120 megabits on the download (while I should get 180 megabits), and only 2 megabits on the upload. The link speed is reported at 866 mb/s.

I tried moving a file from my laptop to a network share and it was going at a measly 400 KB/s. It goes at 80+ MB/s if I go wired.

The access point and my laptop are right next to each other. I disabled WMM on the r6250, and this made the download drop to 30megabits, but the upload jumped back up to 10 megabits.

I tried doing a speedtest on my phone connected to 5ghz, and it got 180 megabits download, and 12 on the upload. I also tried booting in Ubuntu on my laptop and I still get the same 120/2 speeds.

Anyone have any idea? I am tempted to just buy the broadcom BCM94352HMB.

Since you get pretty much the same (crappy) speeds in Ubuntu and in Windows it does seem so suggest a hardware issue of some kind.
Normally I would go with driver but that's unlikely seeing as Linux and Windows drivers can't possibly suffer from the same issue.

Which leaves wither some kind of an issue with hardware (including antenna placement being sub-optimal or antennas not being properly connected) or an issue with router (either its configuration or simply lack of compatibility - which still happens).

See what soft of speed do you get if you set your 5GHz network to 802.11n. You should be connected at 300mbps but at least in theory you should be able to get similar speeds.
Also do you use a firewall (other than Windows one)? What anti-virus do you use?
I know it sounds like standard questions that have nothing to do with anything but I have discovered that firewall driver can slow down Wi-Fi (it's still loaded even if you close the firewall).

Last but not least - make sure you have the latest firmware for your router.

I don't see an option to set the r6250's wireless mode in the web configuration. I just use Windows firewall and MSE.
I tried my brother's laptop which is a sager 14in laptop with an intel 7260 AC card. He got the same 120/2 speeds.

I'm using the latest firmware for the r6250 V1.0.4.2_10.1.10

I ordered the broadcom adapter, it won't come for about a week. I'll update the thread when it arrives. I'm curious to see if the r6250 is the problem or the intel 7260. I also have a 6230 in another laptop, I'll check that in a moment.

EDIT: The 6230 does 90/10. So the problem does seem to be with the 7260.

The speeds are still terrible with the Broadcom. If I had to guess, maybe the LG G2 connects in wireless N mode and the Wireless AC mode on the r6250 has issues. From what I've read though, the LG G2 connects in wireless ac mode.

    Got it, I just flashed dd-wrt http://www.myopenrouter.com/download/dd-wrt-kong-mod-10-26-15-netgear-r6250

I was getting 400 mb/s link speed, but after playing around with the settings I got it. VHT80 mhz, and channel 48, and setting the extension channel to upper upper
made me get the full 866 mb/s speeds. On speedtest I get the full 180/12

Both the 7260 and broadcom get full speeds, so it was just a problem with the r6250.

I'm actually getting 50 MB/s lan transfers now, awesome.
