Slow internet Please help

hi i have just bought a new laptop Compal IFL90 it has an Intel Pro 802.11a/g/n Integrated Wireless LAN inside it.
I can connect to the internet ok but im getting a much slower connection than my dads dell laptop(also wireless)
On zdnet speedtest i get 2439 KBPS and my dad gets 8923 KBPS(which is the same speed as the desktop connected by the cable)
Can anyone shed some light on the situation?any ideas would be very welcome.

 

You sure your dad doesn't prioritize his packets over yours in the router? Sounds like something I would do to my Kid, if she were old enough to use the computer. Do you get any better speed by moving to a different area or are you right beside the router and still getting the slow speed? I hate wireless sometimes.

 

first thing to do is test both laptops with the ethernet cable. this will tell you if it's the wireless or something more general. if your laptop is slower than your dad's connected by the ethernet cable, you will know it is not necessarily your wireless that is the problem...

may dad wouldnt know how to prioritize his packets.I have tryed moving the laptop close to the router and its exactly the same speed.
I have just tested my lapotop with ethernet cable and i get around 7000 KBPS so its deffinatley somthing to do with the wireless.000111 you have exactly the same laptop as me what wireless drivers do you use ive tryed the latest ones but now i keep getting dissconnected intermitently so i may have to use the drivers that came with it.

uninstall your current driver, and make sure you remove any program that configures your internet connection (such as intel proset). reboot.

then install the Intel® PRO/Wireless Drivers-Only for Windows* and you will have the same setup i have.

i let XP do the connection, so DON'T download and install the

Intel® PROSet/Wireless Network Connection Software for Windows* XP

what driver are you using now? i have had problems with the intel proset wireless connection software before, so i would advise against using it. just install the driver only and let windows configure the connection. you will, of course have to input your password if the router has security enabled... let me know if this helps!

 

I would not use intel management way to much over head.

Download and run cablenut optimize. get the aux pack to. then select the settings that matches your setup.

 

yes, as i said- DON'T use the intel proset management... just the driver!!!

 

ok i have uninstalled all the software and have downloaded and installed the intel 11.5 drivers and im using windows to connect to the internet but still no change im still only getting 2500KBPS and the internet connects and disconnects all the time something is def not right im not sure what to do.ill try that optimizing software and see if that helps.

 

At last i think that has fixed it!
I have just ran the cablenut optimize as blue68f100 sugested and im now getting the proper internet speed of 7000 to 8000KBPS thanks for that info.It also seems to have fixed the connecting and disconnecting problem i was having only time will tell.Also thank you to 000111 for your help it is much appreicated.

My internet speed is fixed but the connection is up and down,it will connect then 10 secs later it disconnects and then reconnects etc etc BUT this only happens when i am running off the batteries and works fine when i am pluged into the mains electricity(not very wireless!)
Do you have any ideas on this problem?

 

Make sure your power settings on your NB has the wireless set to always on and max power. These are scattered in 2 places, the power management cp and the cards adv properties.
