desktop: winXP corp, p4 2.8ghz, 2gb ram, highpoint rr2300 with 3x500gb in raid5, linksys pci gigabit card
laptop: Vista home premium, c2d 2.4ghz, 4gb ram, attansic gigabit ethernet card
    gigabit switch, cat6 cables

im not expecting a full 100-125MBs, but the 14-15MBs i get in either direction seems kinda slow. all drives are sataII, both computers are connected at 1gbs...any ideas where my bottleneck could be? am i crazy to think i'll get anything faster than this?

1: Vista's file copy performance (especially network transfers) sucks badly.
2: What kind of speed do you get if you don't copy over network?

    1. if im not mistaken, isnt this addressed in SP1?

    2. i'm not exactly sure what you mean here.

edit: if you mean transfer between drives...i get the normal 40-50MBs

through the network via ftp im getting 70MBs spikes on smaller transfers and 40-50MBs during large file transfers. pretty much what my drives can handle.

this is awesome, i dont regret upgrading my network anymore.

If your getting 40-50 during ftp your doing good. I discovered the drivers are real flakey on my internal card. I had to go through several and ended up with one that was 4 or 5 version old for best performance on my XP machine. I found the limit on my pc was cpu related, it was maxed at 100%. As long as you can stay away from SMB for large file transfers you will be good.

And yes once you get a taste of speed you start upgrading other hardware.

wow, i just keep running into problems....

i made that post before the file was done moving, it ended up freezing. turns out i'll get really nice speeds on ftp transfers until they freeze. the transfer just stops, no visible errors or anything.
    using filezilla on both ends.

this is so annoying, i've spent so much money on hardware and now that i'm so close to being done, i hit a wall. i really hope someone can help...

During your ftp, you have a setting to restrict the number of connections. Try setting the max to 1 or 2 for testing. Also, Is this happening on both xp and vista or only one PC. Or are you transfering files between the 2 pc's.

    things just keep getting worse....

i am now unable to access my xp machine in anyway from the vista machine. vnc, filezilla, even plain network...cant access it  all of this was working yesterday, now its not.

on the other hand, i just tried to move something from the vista machine to the xp machine through the network on the xp machine, and it moved at excellent speeds.

this makes no sense to me.

i am currently uninstalling the gigabit card i added to the xp desktop machine, i'm gonna reinstall it and get it back to default settings before i keep messing around.

edit: okay, after reinstall, vnc and network access are up again. for some reason i cant connect via ftp.

edit 2: found a weird workaround, i dont get how it works but it does. when i use vistas network function to move a large from my vista machine to my xp machine i get lousy speeds...14-18MBs. moving the same file again from the vista machine to the xp machine, but using the xp network function yields speeds of 40+MBs...which i believe is as fast as a 7200 rpm drive can handle. so if i want to transfer files the fast way without actually getting up and going over to my desktop, all i have to do is open a remote window for the xp machine and do normal network transfers.

silly...i know, but suitable for now. im gonna consider this a small victory...i still need to get an ftp server up and running properly for when im on the road.

any further thoughts or suggestions are highly appreciated.

When you make changes, try reboot the pc to force it to use the new connections. I know it's a pain to do it, but at times it's the only way. Is your host pc going to sleep???? the reason for no response?

Hmm, i had a dlink in my hands and put it down for the linksys cuz ive been using linksys a long time and never had any issues with their products. oh well.
as for my speeds, its only when using vista that i have slow speeds. working from within xp is only slightly slower than a direct drive to drive transfer. :)

My laptop has some Attansic gigabit card, i dont know the exact model.

@blue - funny you mention it, i have been making myself restart each time, and its been really annoying. :(
host pc has sleep and hibernate disabled.

gonna go play around with the ftp settings for a bit, i'll let you guys know what i come up with.
