    Hi,
I have an inspiron e1705, with the built-in bluetooth module, 2.0 + EDR, using the latest drivers from Dell. I'm using my mobile phone as a modem, and while I get connection speeds of ~300-900+ kb while tethered via usb, I consistently only connect at about 330kb with bluetooth.
Any ideas? My phone definitely has a BT 2.0 module as well, and I've searched the net for any answers, and while others seem to have the same problem, I can't find any solutions. :(
I asked at NBR's sister site brighthand, and no reply. Any ideas here would be greatly appreciated. :)
    Thanks. :)

Hummm, it's strange, BT should not be your bottleneck, your cellphone modem should. BT EDR can theorically go up to 1Mbps. I'm wondering if it's a transceiver defficienty related issue.

Well, I was reading in some places, that bluetooth DUN is slightly slower than tethering, but never any explanation as to why.
It's really not important, but it's one of those things that's going to bug me till I figure it out.

Just because the standard USB is much, much faster than BT.

Ok, but you said that BT +EDR can theoretically go up to 1mbit/s. I'm connecting at 330k.
I guess that's just what I'll get with BT. :)

Sounds like a software issue to me. What kind of phone do you have and how do you tether to it?

I have Verizon and I gotta use a hack to tether. Verizon likes gimping their phones :( :(

@surfasb, I have a samsung m520 with sprint, and tether with a usb cable. :) It just lets me do it. :)
@Wirelessman, good question, I have no idea. :D To be honest, I'm new to handhelds, even though I have years of experience with pc's.

    @talin29

Which Bluetooth module do you have in your laptop?

Also, Bluetooth can sometimes cause interference with wireless. Was wireless disabled when you checked the connection rate? If not, i'm curious to know if disabling it has any change in the speed being reported.

You must contact sprint to find out about the profile meant to communicate with your cell phone to get access to internet.

Sorry for the late reply. I have the dell bluetooth 355 module (2.0 +EDR).
Wirelessman, why do I have to contact sprint? I'm not sure I understand. I can connect to the internet through bluetooth, of course I have an unlimited phone as modem data plan as well.

It may be, that I'll never get full connection speeds through bluetooth, and that's fine, that's why I tether. :D It was just bugging me and I wanted to figure out why it was so slow, but it looks like I'll have to live with it. :)
Thanks for trying to help. :)

That's why you should call sprint so they can help you to setup the BT profile to get a higher throughput.

Thanks wirelessman. :) I contacted sprint about it, and they said that nothing can be done. The tech support rep said that cause it's being transmitted over wireless, it will be slower. Don't know if that's true or not, but so be it. :)

Wired speed > wireless speed. USB 2.0 has a connection speed of 480Mbps+/- bluetooth is MUCH slower. I saw the same issue with speed difference when using bluetooth vs USB 2 years ago, and since then I have only tried the bluetooth and never relied on it.
