Recently received my new DV4000 and it's great except that the wireless is extremely slow, despite it showing excellent signal strength and 11 Mbps.

Pages are extremely slow to populate (in both IE and Firefox) and downloading files are excruciatingly slow. I called HP support and spoke with an extremely friendly woman, but she wasn't of much help, suggesting that maybe it was a problem with my router.

My notebook has the Intel 2200BG + bluetooth and I did update the driver from HP's site. I also updated the firmware in my router, which is a Linksys BEFW11S4 - Wireless-B Broadband Router. I tried disabling WEP and it produced no noticeable change. I also turned off Bluetooth which also had no affect.

I have an older Compaq notebook (Pentium III running ME) with a Linksys adapter card and it runs circles around the new HP when surfing or downloading.

Is it possible that my router and the 2200 just don't get along? Not sure what else to do at this point, so I was going to stop by the library and see how wireless behaves on their network.

If I need to get a new router so be it, but the current situation is unacceptable. If anyone has any suggestions or possible fixes I'd very much appreciate hearing them.
    Thanks.

You might get more responses from the Networking/Wireless sub-forum up in hardware. I bought my dv4000 with the Broadcom card because the 2200 has a reputation of weird issues like yours... of course, I also didn't want bluetooth.

I had optimistcally hoped the 2200 issues were resolved 'cuz I really wanted Bluetooth.

Think I should repost over there or would that be cross posting and improper?

Hi Rawson, im Nick. Im in oddly enough in Elgin just to let you know. So you almost virtually in my eyesight :p

I would check the 2200 card issue thread, and look around and try all the drivers. You can go to intel's site as well, and try downloading all the drivers for the card, and see if any of them work.

If you don't want to, you can go out to Best Buy, (should be one right along Algonquin Rd.), and get a new wireless card. You will have a better reception and a lot less hassle.

But if that is not an option, try all the drivers you can for that card.

    Howdy neighbor! :)

I changed the channel on the router from 6 to 1 and my transfer speeds on the notebook improved greatly, so I'm going to use for a bit and see if it continues that way.

Unfortunately, now one of my TiVo units isn't connecting to the network and countless attempts to reconfigure have proved unsuccessful - isn't technology grand!

Yeah if the channel change worked, there might be interference with something. Any cordless phones, TV's, Kitchen Appliances near by?

Well the improved performance from the channel change was short lived and I spent nearly the whole weekend trying to reconnect the TiVo to my network!

Nick - just to clarify, you suggested above going to BestBuy for another 2200bg card? Are those easily accessible and changed?

No, don't get another 2200 Card. Go there and ask if they sell "Internal Wireless Cards" because i don't think they do. So if not, you will have to order one online. If any i would go with the 2915 Card online. I only think best buy sells external cards which are easier to install and stick out of your notebook. The internal cards are fairly easy to install, and you should be able to do it easily.

After using my laptop on the wireless at work and seeing decent results, I decided to replace my router.
Picked up a D-Link (WBR-1310) at BestBuy today and now all is good!

Rawson, Have you had any isue'slately with the speed?
Microsoft has updated XP to Ipv6 and it really slows things down tremendously. I ran across another site that suggested uninstalling the Ipv6 and allowing my system to return to Ipv4 which I did and it went back to normal speed.

From the command prompt type "Ipv6 uninstall"

Also, I never have felt the Linksys was all that, I have an old D-Link DI-614+ which my daughters Acer with Broadcom wireless get's excellant signal and speed. Strange a cheaper product works so much better?

I have had absolutely no issues since I've been using the new router.
