Should I get A wireless N card?

I am surrently getting either the vostro 1500 or the inspiron 1521,and I was wondering if paying the extra money for a wireless N card is really worth it?

 

Do you have a wireless N router or plan to buy one in the next 2 years? Wifi G (54 mbit) is fast enough internet surfing and N is only better if you plan to share large files over the network with other draft N devices.
Draft N also has slightly better range or is said to have it. If you just want to log into wifi hotspots or use the internet with a wifi router at home you wont need wireless N.

It is faster. But what are you doing with it? If you only use it for internet then what is your internet connection. most people have a connection of less then 10mbit (I think 2-6mbit is most commen for DSL and cable). So draft N will not speed this up since G wifi with 54mbit is faster then the internet connection so that the internet connection becomes the limiting factor. Even with a 25mbit connection that people might be able to get soon G wifi will still be fast enough.

If you go N, remember to check regularly for drivers update. Hold off as long as you can on the router. I just read that they will start certifying the hardware soon to the Draft v2 spec. So they think routers that support this spec will meet the finalized spec. So if this is the case only buy a WiFi Certified router (v2 draft). As far as the nb card, go a head. In most cases it will give you the 3 antennas needed for the MIMO spec. Even though I recommend against being a beta tester for the mfg. NB are not locked in like routers are. As for distance most test show it is not any better than a good 11g. But through put is greater. 11n is design for WPA2 (best speed), It does not like WEP. With no security you will get 11g speeds in some cases. They have finally found a way to push users to setup good security.

 

I just bought the DLINK Xtreme N router and it's by far the best router I've ever owned. My main purpose was for the advanced security features and the good neighbour policy because I was getting interference from other routers nearby and this router solved the problem.

I got the Dell Wireless N as well and I'm very impressed over the wireless G I was using. I do find better range and better connectivity but I find the speed to be the same and great distances. When I am very close to the router I will get better speeds than I had with G. So as far as speed, I'm not really feeling the difference but everything else has been great.

 

the Wireless N card is backwards compatible... so if you don't mind spending the extra money, it will make your new notebook "future-proof" so to speak.

EDIT: the N card in my new 1520 is also the best wireless card i have ever used. the speed is amazing!
