Hi, being a newbie to the game, can someone please help me to access my newly bought laptop with the internet by connecting to my old laptop (which has currently has access to wireless broadband through a PCMCIA card)?
Do I need to buy a wireless router to connect to my old laptop? Both laptops have been bought within the last 12 months.

You have a wireless router right? Then both of them are connected through it. They are connected in that way, and both have the Internet access.

If your wireless broadband PCMCIA meant GPRS or UMTS card connecting through the mobile operator, then you just have to share its connection and then connect your laptops through either Wireless lan (ad hoc) or cable. The "old" laptop must be set to share a connection - that way it becomes "host" and shares the IP to the "client" making the network.

    Hope it helps,

    Ivan

    Thanks Ikovac,

I don't have a router. Besides how do I setup my old laptop to do the sharing? Any steps you can share - sorry again - very new as you can see!

So let's do it through cable then. Connect computer with the LAN cable (UTP). It may be crossover, but new network cards can switch automatically.
You have some connection to the internet, right? Right click - Properties, Advanced. Share Internet connection to other users over Local area network in combo (if it is there).
    You must have administrator rights.
The moment you click apply - it will change IP of your old computer to 192.168.0.1.
Other will get something like 192.168.0.xxx. If it is so (you can check in the Status of the Local area network for example) - computers are in a network. That doesn't mean that you can share and see everything. User must authorize to use resources on the other computer. The best way is to set the sharing and security on folders or disks you want to share. Right click on the folder and choose Sharing and security. Set sharing and give some permissions.
    Tips:
    Check that cable is ok.
Check IP addresses on both computers as mentioned above.
Check the sharing and permissions settings.
Check firewall so that it allows sharing.
It is good idea to log on both computers (or have account) as a same user (same login, password and role). That way some of the security will be automatically granted.
Turn off simple sharing if you need more advanced settings (like sharing folders and different disks with special and different permissions)
    Check Google for more info.

And the last - read the great nickspohn's networking article in the networking forum.

    Hope this helps,

    Ivan
