using a router would probably be easiest...in win xp, you can pretty easily 'share' folders which will appear on the local network (LAN).

You can also buy a 'crossover cable' to connect two computers together via network cards. I've never done this, but it would be cheaper than buying a router just to transfer files.

Download WarFTP and setup, I don't think it supports xp. But it is a very good ftp program with proper security features. Add users you want to have access.

Any way what you have to do is setup a ftp server. Then create a firewall rule to point the ftp port (21) to the IP address of your server.

Ok as I understand it, you just want to share some files between two computers on the same network right? This is very simple. I assume they are both XP machines? First you have to be in the same workgroup. Go to My Network Places. In the left hand column choose 'Set up a home or small office network'. Follow the prompts. Do the same thing on both PCs and be sure you use the same name for the wrokgroup.

Now that you are in the same workgroup, go to the folder that contains what you want to transfer. Right-click on it and choose sharing and security. Click the 'Sharing" tab. In the middle of the pane choose to 'Share this folder on the network'. Now the folder is shared.

Go back to My Network Places on the computer you want to transfer to, and in there should be the folder you just shared. Drag and drop! That is a basic walkthrough, try it and let us know if you run into any problems.
