Due to the major sucess of my other thread (not) I decided to try a new approach. Instead of using a LAN I'd go for an Ad-Hoc.

Basically I have this laptop connected to the internet via 3G dongle. I want to share that connection over an Ad-Hoc with another laptop.

I have ICS enabled on the 3G connection and I have the Ad-hoc on my wireless card set up with the other computer. Win7 on the Dongle Computer says that there is Internet on the 3G connection and the Ad-Hoc but the other computer, a Windows Vista computer says there is no internet. Just local.

IP4 & 6 is set up to configure automatically. I tried manual.. Firewall is set to allow. Even tried with it off.

I've tried everything I can think of and by what's on other forums I should have everything set up perfectly. Why cant the other Vista computer with no internet connect through the internet to this laptop?

How do you connect to the 3G? Through the provider's software? They almost always stop people from doing exactly what you want to do because it costs them more money.

I have had 3g service since 2006 and it is an unlimited plan. What Pitabred says is true. With the dongle plugged into a computer using there software you will not be able to share your signal in an Ad-Hoc or over a cable sharing. Verizon even blocked my bluetooth sharing with my palm on an update once. I retaliated by purchasing a couple of evdo routers when they were on sale. You just missed march madness sales on a couple of them. I have two Cradlepoint models. an MBR1000 for home and a PSH300 that is battery operated for travel. They not only allow sharing but make it possible to place the modem in the best location for the cell reception. The 3g store carries several brand of them. 3Gstore.com, 3G/4G Routers, Antennas, Amplifiers, WiFi, Verizon & Sprint Data Cards

Thanks for telling me that Pita. That's pretty disgusting of my company. I can just as easily use the windows Dialer that can connect to the internet through the 3G. Will that make a difference at all?

    Thanks again for the help.

Have you specified a default gateway on the vista notebook? And is it pulling any DNS addresses?

EDIT: Once connected to the ad-hoc network, try a release/renew of IP's.

    ipconfig /release
    ipconfig /renew

I have not tried sharing from a dun. You might try that setup. I have just the modem drivers setup on my XP Pro laptop and am able to get on the web. I setup a new connection by putting #777 for the phone number than putting the 10 digit modem number for the user name and using my password for the password. When I first used my modem in 2006 sharing over a cat 5 cable worked. One or two updates later it did not. Not being able to share and place the computer in a good location for best signal was what led me to purchase an evdo router.

Android + Root + Wireless Tether = Done. More so: Froyo+ and Root : Wired 3G Tether built right into the OS.
    iOS + Jailbreak + MyWi 4 = Done

Wireless Provider : Can all get bent. I don't aggressively use it, always lest than a 1-2GB on my 3G plan so I could care less about their revenue retention tactics for the naive or frivolous. I would never consider paying a redundant 3G fee just to share that 3G (or 4G) w/ another device.
