I recently received my HP DV5T in the mail. I love the laptop, but the wireless connection is horrible. I bought a D-Link DIR-655 Draft N router last week since the new HP had the 5100 N capable chipset. Using my old desktop, and a wireless G card, I was able to consistently get around 54 Mb/s.....using the laptop, with the supposedly faster draft N card, I barely get above 15 Mb/s.

    What is going on here?

How far away from the router are you?

Make sure you have the latest drivers in the NB and router. Being a NB check the power options. Your NB may not be running max performance if on battery.

Go to www.speakeasy.net to test your connection.

If only 1 device, setup everything for 11n 5ghz, WPA2 AES (Personal).

Make sure you have selected the appropriate wireless mode in your wireless adapter.

how can I tell what wireless mode my pc is using? When I am right near my router, the speed jumps to a whooping 65mb/s....no where near the 300mb/s the router is capable of. I thought wireless N was supposed to be faster.

Do you have your router's security mode set to WPA personal, WPA mode at WPA2 only, cypher mode at AES, mixed 802.11n and g, auto channel scan, transmission rate set to best, and channel width set to 20/40 auto? Do you have the latest firmware available installed (check the D-Link website)?

I have the DIR-655 and have fantastic speed. However, all of my network gear uses the Atheros chipset, which is used by D-Link. You might not get 300Mbps if your equipment doesn't match up exactly, but you should get at least 140Mbps.

I'm running the beta firmware, 1.11_MSBeta, 2007/12/24, and it's rock solid. Register your router on the D-Link site and then sign up for the Beta forums. After you do that, you'll have access to the beta firmware.

I just set my settings to exactly what you have. We'll see what I get. Would updating the firmware help? I just got the router about a week ago

alright, I changed the settings. Now I'm getting about 40 in the location I was getting 10 mb/s, so thats an improvement at least!

    UPDATE!!!

So I just check the settings from the family rooms, where I previously was having horrible signal (6 - 15 mb/s), and I am now getting around 100 - 140 mb/s!!! kegobeer, all I can say is thank you!

Is it worth it to upgrade to the beta firmware? Or should I stick with what I have?

Check your firmware version and then check the D-Link site and review the updates for the current firmware. If you are running an old firmware, you might consider upgrading. However, if things are working now, it might be best to leave well enough alone. ;)

I highly recommend registering your router and joining the D-Link beta forums, though.
