    Hi

I am going back to uni in a week and would like to setup a wireless network for my room.

I was thinking of the setup shown in the atttached pic,

I can't use the wireless card in my laptop as the network as the HTC hero and wireless printer only connect to infrastructure networks no ad-hoc ones.

My main question is, can the WAN port on the router be attached to the shared ethernet port on my laptop?

Any other solutions would be appreciated - especially if they are cheaper!

Edit: I'm not an expert on the subject, but I feel this is good enough. Experts are welcome to correct me if I'm wrong.

That's similar to what I have at home. Unfortunately I can't implement it because the uni only allows a student one ip address so anything else that people want connected it has to be hidden i.e. internet connection sharing on the pc. At uni a guy had a desktop with two ethernets which meant he could play his 360 online through his desktop.

Thanks for the reply but I have to rule that one out.

I was thinking that I might change the router to an access point and a switch.

    Any Ideas

Thanks for doing the drawing I find they make things alot easier.

Internet Connection Sharing is basically setting a computer up as a NAT router. You should be able to accomplish the same thing by connecting your wireless router's WAN port to the campus LAN and hanging the rest of your machines off the router's LAN ports.

I second this. Connect your router to the University's network and just plug everything else to the router.

We have been explicity informed not to attach a router to the university network otherwise it crashes the network for everyone. This has happended muliple times before but I know that ICS works and doesn't interfer with everything so was kinda pushing that route.

    @ MentalWall

Your setup will work. However, you have to use a crossover ethernet cable between the USB/Ethernet adapter and the Router's WAN. Also, DHCP may not hand out the proper gateways and DNS servers; so, you might need to know the basic networking stuff. Anyhow, if you need help, just PM me.
