Several students, including me, are fed up with our school lack of wifi. We are taking online courses and 3 of us bought laptops solely for this reason. Now the school tells us that they want us to use computers that are incrediblely slow and the school retains the right to remove us at any point in time. So now we want to draw up a proposal of the cost of setting up a separate wifi connection. So what type of router would be best and what other points should we really emphasize on? We don't want to keep stealing the radio station next door's wifi. Thanks!

if you are setting up a wifi for school its not good to use normal wifi router like the ones you find at home , because of the large surface area and security issues is important , one of the best routers that can be configured for security and have alot of functions is the cisco The Cisco MWR 1900 Mobile Wireless Edge Router , i think it will be pretty expensive but not if the school will pay , if your school is not willing to pay for good secured routers , u will need to go with the Linksys router and buy some repeaters to enhance the router range ,
NB the Cisco router may also need repeaters

so i would recommend a normal router like the 3 com
    http://cgi.ebay.com/3Com-OfficeConn...9b65186bb&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14#ht_2454wt_1165
, if people are going to download alot from ur library router u ll need a router that supports QoS to split speed between them ,

jackluo923 mentioned in a another thread routers with that function

"You'll need a router with QoS function. A cheap solution can be asus Wl-520Gu or their Wireless N alternatives. Those routers are very cheap and offers better signal than Linksys's famous WRT54G while offering the same reliability and performance."
3 com router that supports QoS
    http://cgi.ebay.com/3COM-3Com-Wirel...c50aac236&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14#ht_1756wt_1165

If your friends are good users of the internet not abusers :D , u will be fine with the normal 3com , if u feel that some people will come perform large downloads u will need the QoS routers so u can limit speed per user :D , good luck

Just simply purchase a Wireless N router, preferably Netgear, and that should be able to cover the whole library. Once you have it set up, you can simply add TKIP+AES encryption to lock out all but you three who contributed to the router. And getting this regular Home Router will only take up one wired line in the library, so everyone else will be able to continue working on the regular PC's
