My family at home has the following setup:

3G router connected via Ethernet to two routers spread on different floors of the house.

They just got DSL and are attempting to use it. The wireless network of the DSL router is working just fine, so we know the internet is working fine. The issue is that when they took the two Ethernet cables and plugged it into the new DSL router, the internet didn't work from the two routers.

I am not sure why this is. I figured they could just swap out the cables from the old router to the new and it would work immediately.

Any ideas of what I can check/change to get it to work? Thanks so much.

So the DSL modem will only have one Ethernet out, and it's going where?

The Ethernet out from the DSL modem should be going to the WAN port on the first router (I'm guessing downstairs). Then the other router should be configured as a repeater... but if you're going to connect it by Ethernet also, you'll need to be on different subnets.

The DSL modem will have two Ethernet cables coming out, each leading to another router on different floors of the house.

Two different cables, from two different ports on the DSL modem, to two different routers.

This setup was working on the old 3G modem. I figured they could just remove the 3G modem and replace it with the DSL modem and it would work fine, but it's not. I'm not sure what the issue is.

A DSL modem doesn't have two ethernet ports. It'd have to have a router or switch built in... which is probably your issue.

Specific question: This modem you have, what brand and model is it? Also, what brand and model was the 3G modem?

I'm trying to get an idea of just how this was working prior to DSL, because for the life of me I cannot picture this topology.

Is the login credentials in the Modem? If so I can see this working, modem with a switch. If not the Router must handle the ISP connection. With most all modem you only have 1 usable output. It's been may years sine I have heard of 2 outputs. With most ISP you have to pay for a second IP if using a second router as a router.
