    I have a laptop with wireless access, and also a pc, both connected to a linksys router. i was wondering how i can set up a network, since windows asks me to set up either a wireless, or cabled connection. both computers have XP. Any help would be appreciated.

    So wait, this is your set up:
    The Internet goes into the router
    The desktop is connected to the router by ethernet
    And the laptop is now

    What i would do is redo the setup and configuration, and do the settings for wireless and connected. On linksys i recall, you do the wireless first, then it will tell you to connect any additional computers.
    You need a wireless card to for the laptop.

    You actually don't need to set up a network. What is it you're trying to accomplish?

    What i'm trying to do is to share my files between my computers. I am already able to share the internet with the routher, but the files are a different story.

    If both machines are connected to the router, either wirelessly or via cable, all you have to do is enter the IP address of the other unit. You should be able to also enter the name of the computer.

    From the notebook just do the following:

    - Create a Folder on your Desktops HDD -> Right click the folder -> Properties -> Sharing Tab -> Select Share This Folder -> Change the Share Name if you want -> Click on Permissions -> Make sure the Everyone account has either Full Control or Change permissions -> Click ok until you're out
    - Start -> Run -> CMD & click OK -> IPCONFIG /ALL
    - This will give you the IP address of the desktop
    - Start -> Run -> \\<IP address of desktop> & click OK (remove the < >)
    - This will allow you to see shared items on the desktop, just goto the folder you just shared and copy/paste your files

    If you want to go the other way (Desktop into Notebook), the just replace where it says desktop for notebook.

    Just make sure Microsoft Internet Connection Firewall is disabled on both systems before attempting. If it's on in the unit you want to access, you won't get access.

    Oops, sorry. Typing too quickly and forgot to type that the IP address goes after that. (eg. \\192.168.xxx.xxx)

    Did that work for you?
