The laptop that I'm using as an HTPC is connected via wired ethernet, so the wifi card goes unused. Thus, I'm wondering if it's possible to use it as a wireless AP so that other devices in the living room can get a speed boost.

In Windows 10, just click on the networking option to create a mobile hotspot. You can use a wired Ethernet feed, or a WWAN card (ie: 4G LTE) for the upstream Internet connection. Pretty easy if you have supported hardware.
