I've just purchased my first laptop, and now have to buy a router. A friend recommended the Linksys WRT110, but i have also been looking at the WRT160 ????? Which is better? I live in a 2 storey house, so I'll want to use the laptop upstairs. AND will it interfere with the TV cable wirless transmitter that runs on 2.4ghz as well??

I believe the WRT110 is IEEE 802.11b/g router and the WRT160 is IEEE 802.11b/g, IEEE802.11n Draft router. So the WRT160 is the better of the two as it supports the newer/faster n standard. Your laptop has to support it to make a difference as well.
As far as interference goes either can be set at any of 7 channels (I believe) so I don't think it will be a problem.

That's great, but what about these little USB sticks - do they work instead of a router, or do you need both and why?

    What little USB sticks?

Did they toss in some usb wireless adapters? You don't need them if you have a wireless adapter already

actually, i meant the "USB adapters" I think you need to use them in conjunction with a router, but some make it seem like it's all you need??

You need them if you do not have one in your computer. You "can" use usb adapters to communicate between two computers in an adhoc arrangement, but you need a router to hook up to your home network (although some ISP's provide "modems" with wireless built in--for example, at&t's 2wire modems often have wireless adapters built in.
