    Hi,
Sorry that this post is a little long, but it is in order to show you,
that I have already tried all the solutions below, without any luck.....

I'm having a serious problem with my partner's wireless internet connection.
I'm living in my university dorms with another partner.
he has a cable internet connection,
which is connected to an edimax br-6204wg wireless router.
he has an old IBM notebook with Win XP, and can only connect to the wirelss network,
after he's plugging a lan cable from the router to his notebook,
and when he's removing the cable, he can still access the internet via the wireless signal,
(i don't know how this make any sense, but that's the only method he can connect with,
he cannot connect to the wireless signal from the start, without having to do that, he doesn't mind that though)

I just bought a new HP 6000 series pavillion notebook, with VISTA.
in the first two days, I could connect to the wireless network just fine
(i had some minor problems at the start though, and then I would have to do "diagnose",
choose "find automatically the right IP settings..." and it would be fine)

in the third day in the morning, suddenly I couldn't connect anymore to the network,
It recognizes his network, and has a 5 out of 5 signal, but says that the connection was "unsuccesfull".

(btw at first It did connect, but could only connect a "local" connection, without internet acess,
and since today, it just doesn't connect at all,
saying im in a "limited access" to an unidentified network, after trying to log into my friend's network fails.)

I have no idea why, as I cancelled the password requirement, to make sure that a wrong password wasn't what causing the problems,
I've also went to "manage wireless networds", and deleted any profile that was saved there,
I've also tried to use any diagnose solution that vista offered me, including get auto new IPs, reset the IP adapter... etc.
I've also tried to reset the router itself, through the router software (not full reset though, the regular reset)
but nothing helps! I can connect perfectly fine to my neighbours and to my university wireless networks...

I've called my friend's ISP support, and they offered that I should try to do a full reset to the router,
so I would have to redefine all its ISP and DNS back again (and of course, there isnt any guarantee that would help)
and they offered that maybe I should do a firmware upgrade (under my own resposibility) to the router.

I still havn't tried these two options, because the router belongs to my partner,
and obviouslly I don't want to take a risk of screwing his internet connection up for an unknown period of time...
(for him, the internet works properly as long as he's using the cable-plugging method I've mentioned above)
especially when like I've mentioned before, in the first two days I DID use his wireless connection just fine...
and didn't change any definitions, at least not as far as i can tell, not in my notebook, and not in the router,
    as neither did he...

do you have ANY ideas as to what could be the cause of the problem? I've never had so much trouble with a single network problem...

    Thanks!

Ok, let me tell it back and see if we are on the same page.

You and your bud have a LAN cable going into a wireless router. When your bud is connected via ethernet, the wireless function stops working, thus, you cannot connect. However, when you both are wireless its fine. You, personally, are also having connectivity issues with the connection dropping and such.

If this is correct I would start with a router reset. Then check on firmware upgrades for it. After this try different scenarios, ie. you lan, he wireless, ... and see what still does not work. Then post back.

I have found that with my Vista laptop, sometimes if I do not have the internet connection, wireless or lan, on/connected during bootup, it will lag and all, the force me to renew and such to get back online. Hope thi helps.

sorry but you got it all wrong...
there is no connection between my connectibity problems to my partner being connected at all, all i said was that: he cannot connect to the wirless connection neither, unless he first connects his notebook to the router via a cable, and if he wants to unplug the cable, he is able to continue surfing wireless as well.

I myself don't have any cable, and since i want to use the wireless network, as I've managed to do for a period of two days, i don't need any cable... and currently can't use the internet at all, since i can't connect to the router.

you know what, ignore anything i've said about my partner, its not that relevant.

Sounds like your ISP may be doing some mac filtering, most cable operators do. Clone the MAC address of the PC Lan port into the router. Use the one used to setup the account. Then test your connections.

there should be an option to clone the mac under settings- hard wire to the router and go thru the setup routine- it will be there asking if you want to clone the mac of the pc......

could be not sure, blue is usually right about his hunches, but we 're all just guesssing, trying to help you out......

So when you say password, you meant the encryption key?

How exactly old is his IBM notebook? Does it have a 802.11b card instead? Sometimes mixing modes isn't really good and will cause confusion to the machines.

And can you change the channel of the wireless signal to see if it helps?

    shamrock,

Cloning the mac address will require access to the routers admin. Make sure you use the wired connection from your partners pc. It would be easier to use his pc on a wired, most have the option to read the current connection and clone it.

    Did you get it working?
