how exactly does this work? Is there a monthly fee with using a satellite laptop to access the internet? Will it work anywhere at all? I'm moving out to an island without phone lines or internet.

Are you talking about for the home, or world-wide portable, like a satellite phone?

For the home, you'd have to have access to a satellite provider along with a dish, which would feed internet access to the home network. Using a wireless access point, you could get internet access from your laptop around the house. This isn't the cheapest way to get internet access, but it's not horrible. However, I believe some of these solutions still required a phone line for 'upload', but I'm not sure that's the case anymore.

For the portable solution, I'm sure it's much more expensive, and would require more equipment than just a PC card for the laptop. As ZJ said, cellular internet access may be a more practical way to go.
