    Hi,

So I had an old linksys B wireless router whose power supply recently died - so I went out and bought a new D Link "G" router. I secured it properly and all...but I find that my internet is significantly slower, and that the signal strength is much weaker than with my old linksys. With my old router, I'd have my laptop on the first floor of the house (router on 2nd floor) and would get a good signal. Now, with the new router, the signal fluctuates between 50-100%, and I find my internet is very, very slow sometimes.

Either the router is defective, or it is a lousy 30$ router, or I didn't set it up properly :)

This thing is probably going back to the store tomorrow...and I will purchase an "n" router (given that my mbp has "n" networking). Does the apple router work well? Or should I just get the linksys? Any advice? Thanks!!

Sounds like the router to me. I have a Dlink- DR-655 N router right now. Working well except my PDA can only connect to it in G-Only mode which kills N. The apple one seems pretty cool, with usb hard drive sharing and other stuff. Since you only have macs I would get that. Or you can buy the d-link for 120 or so. I also retired my Dlink 108 G mimo dl-634m since I got this new router. You can have for cheap. Msg me if interested. I am hopping Dlink will release an update to let my pda connect while in "mixed g/n " mode.

    GL.

    Hi, Thanks for the reply.

Actually I still need to use my Dell Inspiron running on a G network, so would that kill the N on the apple router? The apple one seems very wasteful....it is almost double the price of the linksys n router! Based on this experience I will go back to linksys...I will probably get a linksys g router. I'm using the router exclusively to connect to the internet and not for file transfers, so I guess I don't "need" n. Is the linksys G a nice choice?

My understanding is if you are using mixed mode n devices should play nice with other n devices and g with n devices at G speeds. Something to that effect. Linksys G should be fine I personally like D-link more. They may even be the same hardware but I prefer the software setup. My MIMO G router has really good range (2 large adjustable antennas). I will give you a great deal. Saves me having to setup an auction.

    Hey,

Thanks for the replies, and thank you very much for the offer. You are making me a very nice deal, but I actually work at a big box electronic store so I get a nice discount anyway. I actually paid around 30 for my DLink router, and will pay a bit more tomorrow to get the DLink "n" router.

I'm sure at that price you can sell it easily, but I appreciate the offer very much so!
Good luck, and thanks for the advice.

Sweet! good deal. I am actually keeping my router to use as an AP just for my PDA if a new bios doesn't help with the DIR-655
