I can get the router to work fine on my computer but when i try to connect my wifes computer it ask for a security key. i have done every thing from reading all the asus materal to several web searches and cant find a way to set up a security key or get around the popup that calls for a security key when i try to get my wifes to connect. can some one help please

Do i have to setup a network for just 2 computers in order for my 2 laptops to work on this RT-N56U router?

Log in to the router using a browser- 192.168.1.1 and setup wireless password there.
This router uses the same SSID (name of the wireless network) for 2.4GHz band and for 5GHz band which causes confusion because you will not know to which band your notebook tries to connect.
Best thing to do is to change the name i.e. SSID for 2.4GHz to "Rt-n56u24" and for 5GHz to "Rt-n56u50". You can use the same password for both.

If you don't know where to look for it on the setup page take a look here- figure 3- on the right hand side of the screenshot.

I get my keys from Home of Gibson Research Corporation (all printable chrs). I then grab just 20 chrs min and copy and paste. I then save the key to a text file on a usb thumb drive. Go to your pc's and copy and paste, done.
