Might be something I am doing, but its got me confused.

I plug in my router just fine, it works a bit. Or it did.
All the cords in the right place, all the lights on. In wireless network, it appears, and connects, my PC connected via wire, says its connected, and it won't really do anything. All my IP's on both PC's look like network IP. When I open IE and go to the router settings, I tried cloing my Mac, then I went to Status, and there it is, there is no IP asigned to my router. I tried renew, and it says it can't do that.

If you clone the MAC address, it must be with the PC used to setup the service. If the router was in place during setup, the routers mac address may be registered with the ISP. You can reset the routers back to factory by holding the reset button for 10sec on most routers.

I have had a few routers that have needed re-booting after making changes. Please give us more detail on your setup? Mfg Router, weather you are DSL or cable .....
Does your pc work with a direct connection to the modem, no router in?

If so please post your results of "ipconfig /all", this is run from a dos command. Do it for both direct connect and with the router in the circuit. But give your router a minute or till all of the led settle down.

The problem is proably the WPA KEY or firewall. First disable your firewall and see it it connects and gives you access if not follow the instructions below. First make sure it will connect to a open system. Disable WPA for a quick test. If good proceed below to setup WPA.

Go to https://www.grc.com/passwords.htm and copy and paste a random generated Security key. I recommend the all printable chr. Some hardware does not like quotes ("). Copy the whole string and paste it to a notepad and save. Now depending on your flavor of routers some will take the full 63 chr, while others will only take 20 chr. Just select the max for router and wireless card supports, most all will take 20. Copy this to a new line on the notepad and save.

Connect to the router (wired) and get to the wireless settings. Do this with your nb. You want the make sure the Settings are WPA-TKIP or WPA-PSK, Delete the Pass key and enter the new one saved to the notepad. If you have not changed the SSID do so at this time. Exit and save. If you changed the SSID MS Zero Config should see the new AP during a site survey. Select and connect to it, when asked paste the key that you just pasted into the router. Save settings. It should now connect.

I quit typing these keys in. Since they are case sensitive it is so easy to make a mistake. If you have more that one wireless, save the notepad file to a usb/thumb drive and take it with you.

See if this gets you connected.

I think that's a good call blue68f100, since there is no problem when he's directly connected. Also update firmware and drivers if you don't have the latest.

You could also do a tracert command(tracert www.yahoo.com) from your laptop, the first entry should be your routers ip address and so on until the it get to its destination. This will tell you if your router is communicating to the net and if your laptop is able to see the router.

But, x10guy? Think thats it, Your right.. it, being the router, wasn't getting a IP from the ISP.
