Hey guys, I need a little help with picking out a router since my family's switching ISPs and we figure it's time for a new router. Currently, we're using a Netgear WGR614 v7 on a 1 Mb/s ADSL connection and so far it's okay (though sometimes I need to reset the router when it's not working). We're switching over to cable and so we need a new modem, and a new router as well. So far, I've decided on the Motorola SB6121 cable modem, as I'd like to have a separate wireless router to pair it up with.

So, here's the setup: We're getting a 3Mb/s down cable connection, the things connecting to it will be a laptop (Intel 6300), Xbox 360, one or two Rukos, and the family desktop (will be wired to the router). Plus the laptops my sister and I own, whenever we're home. The house isn't very big at all (~1700sq, single floor), the router will be in the living room (roughly center of the house, wide-open spaces), and the devices will be at most maybe 20-25 feet away from the router. No fancy settings are required (like QoS or anything like that), and the only things I'd really need would be the obvious (WPA2 security, decent configuration settings).

I have a Linksys E1000 at my apartment that I'm pretty happy with, though I'd like some recommendations on Wireless-N routers at or below $45. Right now I'm looking at the Netgear WNR-2000, though I'd like some other options to consider. OEM refurbished routers are definitely an option, too. Thanks.

Wndr3700 or 4000 refurb from newegg for 49.99
    Or 3400 for 28.

I need a new router for my bro apartment at your budget, those are the 3 i considering . Probably can get wndr3700 for low 40s on eBay but the time to hunt for one is not really worth it. Can't seem to find refurb e3000 /3200/e4200 for decent price.

Well, I got until about Tuesday to pick out a router. I don't buy things from eBay, though.

    That 3700 looks great though.

To complicate the matters a bit there are 4 revisions of this router. Revision one known simply as WNDR3700 and rev2 WNDR3700v2 are very similar and very good.
Revision 3 is nothing like the previous ones (it's based on Broadcom SoC) and it is the one to avoid. Revision 4 seems OK hardware wise and is again Atheros based (with 128MB RAM as a bonus).

You can find revision number on a box so if you're not buying on eBay you might have a chance to check it.

Get a used Linksys E3000 from eBay (~$45) and put TomatoUSB firmware on it for a rock solid performance. Or get a used Linksys E4200 (v1 only) from eBay (~$55-65) and put TomatoUSB firmware on it. I have both and they perform solid, and I am still using them. You can stick with stock firmware out of the box and they both are very good too. I think the WNDR3700 (not sure which version is best) is also a good candidate with custom firmware as well.

I like the Belkin routers. They seem to broadcast very well and they have Access Point mode. With one click and a restart you can turn off all the routing features and have just an access point.
