Right this is my problem. know one has been able to help me so far so whoever does is a genius. :D

    I have a desktop PC
    Internet with virgin (cable)
    cable modem
    Nintendo Wii

I currently have internet through wired internet via my cable modem. I want it to stay this way.

I bought a wirelss router so that my Wii can go online.

I put the installation cd in for my router and it asked me to take out the ethernet cable from my cable modem.
    Problem!
My internet is connected from pc to cable modem Via USB.

I read around on the net how to change it over to ethernet, so i shut down pc, take the wires out and start it all up again with an ethernet cable, so that the mac code gets recognised. it doesnt go to play and i have no internet connected. I plug back the usb wire and i have instant internet.

i tried doing this on my dads PC and that same thing happened.

i have tried two different ethernet cables so thats not the problem
    2 cable modems

My PC is only about a year old and its a dell. I check in device manager if there is a problem with the network adaptors but eveything is fine.
i have cable modem listed and nvidia nforce networking controller.
is the nvidia the ethernet port?
when i plug the ethernet cable into the pc a light comes on so i presume its working.

is it possible to have wired and wireless internet on one pc?

i just want wired internet for my pc and a wireless router so that my wii can play online.

i am stuck and so does everyone else seem to be.

any ideas what i can do?

I don't know anything about USB Internet connections like the one you describe so my suggestion would be to call your ISP and ask them what procedure(s) need to be done for you to connect the desktop to the modem using an ethernet cable.

there is no ethernet port on your modem? you should just have to plug an ethernet cable into that then to your router and leave the usb connection. then install.

have you tried installing with the usb unplugged?

You may need to clone the MAC address of the PC used to setup the account. You may have to see of the USB port has a MAC Address, I do not know if they do. All Network hardware is suppose to have a MAC address.

I do not like setup CD's.

When you connect your pc via cat5e cable your pc should pull an IP address. If you select the port Info it will give you connection info.

    from your browser type "http://gatewayipaddress"
This should bring up the routers login screen, login
Then go to the Wan (Internet) section, If you ISP provided an static IP make sure you enter it. if not leave it as DHCP. There should be a section for internet status. When connection is make it will be populated with DNS and lease times.
