Ok, I just bought brand new D-link router that was 109$ and said lag free gaming at the back but I cant join ANY games that have low lag... I used to be able to join this server on my old router where Id get ~10 ping now I get 100 ping and the other router was trash. its a wireless router being used on a laptop, any ideas. Just to clear things up, up until I got this router I have experienced no lag issues nor have I changed anything.

    -Here is the router http://www.dlink.ca/products/?pid=530
-Latency is indicated as good but when I join the ping is too high.
    -download speed is good.

    Did you configure it?
    Were you wired before/wireless now?
Are you running the latest firmware?

You can try to enable QoS, if the router supports such.

If by configure it, you mean install the software from the CD then yes. idk if its the latest firmware and its wireless.

QoS is enabled. I also set UDP and TCP to endpoint independant and I had low ping for awhile but earlier I tried playing and my ping was high again.

is this connection encrypted? Encryption adds overhead...disable for gaming. Plus, wireless always adds overhead over wired.

I should be able to have a password and play games.

    "should" or "want to"?

I agree, but start with the basics--eliminate all extras and start with a simple connection. This is basic troubleshooting. If the problem persists after turning off encryption, then we move on.

ok. I called d-link which was a TERRIBLE idead because they only made things worst then fixed the problems they caused.

EDIT: *GASP* they.....fixed the ping problem*faints*....watch me come back here in an hour with the problem again. btw, she told me to set my connection settings to dynamic IP but Im pretty sure I have static IP... will htere be a conflict with that?

It is fairly rare to have a static IP these days--even if your ip address never changes, it is assigned by a DHCP server. If you had one, you would be paying extra and you would be certain, not pretty sure. I think you are OK.

Is that all she did was tell you to set your router to dynamic? Not sure why that would lower you ping times

I have my fingers crossed but so far so good. Ill report back when Im almost positive the problem is gone. There is also no longer a password and coincidentially my last router I thought became defective because when I put a password the same thing happened but it worked perfectly before that.

the network key (password) to get on the network only needs to be typed the first time provided you told Windows to remember the network settings.

If there was no request to provide a network key at all, you probably turned off encryption by accident
