Having gotten a new Dell laptop for my parents I want to hook it up for them with a wireless network and need to pick an appropriate router.

Here's the issues: first of all their old desktop is Windows 98, not even SE. They have Verizon DSL and their modem has some router capabilities (so I'm thinking possible IP address conflict, at least with the default IP)

So I need to pick something out that will be relatively painless to install so that they can keep the old machine hooked up and have the new machine on the wireless. Any suggestions? I have a feeling the "quick start" stuff that comes with some routers will be useless for this hookup, due to Windows 98 (again, not SE).

Linksys WRT54G works fine on Win 98. Call Verizon for any problems with setup config.

You should have no problems tho.

I would buy on price since most will work. It's not like the way IP addressess are assigned is somehow different in 98.

I recommend Linksys for your routers. If they have a wireless card then get them a wireless router. Also, if you are computer/network savvy enough you can fiddle with your router settings easily via a browser to change things like your router password and IP forwarding. Not to say the other brands don't do this as well, it's just Linksys has an easy to use interface.
