I've never had to buy a router or even deal with one...My question is what kind of router do I need to buy...or does it even matter...to connect my Asus G1 in with a cable connection?

how much area do you need to be covering? if its not too huge of a zone my recomendation would be to go with the linksys wrt54g. you should be able to find that for about 50 bucks if you look hard enough or 60 if you are lazy, a larger area i would recommend going with linksys or buffalo mimo or even pre-n if you want huge coverage. o and the type of computer being connnected to it really doesnt matter.

is the g1 draft N capable? if so, you might want to consider shelling out $30 extra and spring for the draft n wireless router

Roadracer, If you want to connect wirelessly you will need a wireless router. The Linksys WRT54G the was mentioned earlier, I do not like. The latest v7 model only has 2 meg of a ram and has connection problems. I would recommend the WRT54GL (linux) version or the Dlink DGL 4300. The Dlink is a gaming router that has GigE lan ports. Where most wireless routers only have 100baset.

Here is a link comparing router based on performance. Note that wired and wireless are both on the chart.

I would be covering an area 16' x 12' aka my room. Also, thanks for the advice on the gaming router. I'll check it out!

Most any wireless router can cover that distance, except my Raylink 2500 in my notebook. Just stay away from Belkin, they seem to have reliability problem.

    Just to clarify...

I'm looking to connect my Asus G1 to my roommates cable internet connection in the room next to mine. The cable internet provider is Roadrunner Cable. I've never had to deal with wireless routers before so I'm hoping I won't run into too many hurdles with the install...Is there any software that guides you through the install of a wireless router?

I'm not a fan of pre spec release (11n). In most all cases the hardware bought today may not work with the finallized spec. As with 11g when it was released, some could, some could not, and the ones that did had problem with encryption and throughput. One of the big things with 11n is playing well with other networks. If it sees a 11g with in range is is suppose to drop out of MIMO and may even be forced down to 11g. So personally I would not buy one.

One other thing Netgear only gives you 90 days of free phone tech support. So as the new firmware is released and causes problem you will be forced to email support or $$$$. Believe me netgear has some good techs but the first contact will get you to a level 1 tech. So if you have a major problem good luck. I'm still trying to get advertised features working on my FVS338, have been working with techs for over 1 yr now. Most of the features are working now but it has taken a long time.

So I have an Intel (R) PRO/Wireless 3945ABG it was my understanding that the N card routers will work with all previous wireless standards...is this true? I just wanna make sure I'm not going to spend my money on something that won't work with my current setup...
